What is The Camino de Santiago?

The Camino de Santiago is or "Pilgrimage of Compostela" or "Way of St. James" is a network of old pilgrim's routes to the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia in northwestern Spain. There the remains of Saint James the Great are said to lie along with a shrine to the apostle.

It involves pilgrims walking (or cycling or horseriding) along one of the routes of their choosing at a starting point of their choosing (although pilgrims should complete at least 100 kilometers of the pilgrimage). If one is planning to hike the Camino de Santiago, then make sure one has packed the backpack properly.

Today there is less emphasis on St. James being buried there (as most believe he isn't - the tradition he was there only originated at the beginning of the 9th century), and more emphasis on the spiritual journey on the pilgrimage.

The Camino de Santiago is regarded as one of the three great pilgrimages of Catholicism (the other two to Rome and Jerusalem).
