There are plenty of shallow lakes in Florida - often these are the domain of alligators and plenty of large fish. Lake Tohopekaliga (also called Lake Toho or West Lake) is the largest lake in Osceola County in Florida and is a great outdoor destination for those visiting Orlando.

While Disney World and Universal in Orlando are some of the best theme parks in the world, it is also refreshing to add some very different attractions to one's vacation. The truth is there is much more to Orlando than just Disney and the other theme parks. Lake Tohopekaliga is an ideal destination just outside of Orlando for fishing, relaxing with a family, airboat rides, and even learning about Native American culture.

Why Lake Tohopekaliga Is A Great Break From Orlando?

Lake Tohopekaliga (or Toho) is only minutes from Disney World, Universal, and Orlando. It is characterized by shallow flats of maidencane, bullrush, and hydrilla that help to fortify large populations of baitfish and bass.

  • Size: It covers 22,700 acres (91.86 km2)
  • Name: Means "We Will Gather Here"

Lake Tohopekaliga is linked to East Lake Tohopekaliga by Canal 31. The canal extends for 4 miles or 6 kilometers. To the north, Lake Tohopekaliga is bordered by Kissimmee.

Go to Lakefront Park and visitors can stroll along the scenic walking paths where visitors can spot alligators, turtles, waterfowl, otters, and other creatures calling the lake and its surroundings home. Facilities include grills, restrooms, covered picnic areas, and play areas for the children.
