The Polar Express melted the hearts of many when it hit the big screen back in 2004. Suddenly, magic was a real thing and it was coming to life right before the very eyes of many a child and an adult, all of whom instantly fell in love with its quirky, yet engaging, characters, and the meaning of Christmas itself. While viewers watched the Polar Express play out on the screen, many walked away wondering if there could actually be a train as spectacular as what they'd just witnessed and if a location existed where magic could truly come to life in such a way.

The holiday spirit exists in many forms around the world and in the US, there are scenic railroads that call upon certain magic this time of the year. While they might not be led by eccentric conductors or require tickets that have special messages hole-punched through them, these trains do conjure up the festive and joyous mood that surrounds this time of year.

Adirondack Scenic Railroad

While the Polar Express-themed rides on the Adirondack Scenic Railroad are currently postponed for the 2020 season, this is one of the most exciting train routes in New York State. With stunning views of the Adirondack mountains, it's almost hard to tell the difference between what's real and what could possibly be the North Pole - especially when these train rides are taken after the first snowfall. The ride itself is about two hours and kids are even encouraged to wear pajamas in order to have the full Polar Express experience.

A New Hope Railroad

In order to book a trip on the New Hope Railroad, reservations are now required in advance. The railroad's holiday-themed rides, also called 'Santa's Steam Train Ride' are second to none when it comes to providing an authentic Christmas experience. The unique thing about this train ride is that it's not just a ride - it's an experience! Passengers are encouraged to visit Santa's workshop at the end of the train ride and along the way, cookies and hot cocoa will be served, along with the opportunity for kids to send their letters off to Santa. Carolers will also serenade the train cars with seasonal tunes as everyone takes in the views surrounding New Hope, Pennsylvania.

Historic Blackstone Valley Train

This year, the Blackstone Valley Polar Express looks a little bit different. Rather than having their traditional Polar Express-themed ride, they're offering a Polar Express-themed boat ride along the river. Called the Blackstone Valley Explorer, kids are given the goal of 'finding Santa Claus' on this 20-minute river ride to the 'North Pole.' Along the way, kids are given coloring materials, read 'Twas The Night Before Christmas, and sent on a holiday-themed scavenger hunt. Views of the Blackstone River make it feel as though passengers are actually sailing their way through the North Pole.

Great Smoky Mountain Railroad

The Polar Express Ride on the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad is still ongoing for 2020 and features reduced capacity and thorough cleaning routines in order to ensure the safety of all passengers, and booking is currently now open for the season. On this ride through Bryson City, passengers will be treated to the soundtrack from The Polar Express, a special reading of the book, as well as hot cocoa. The train arrives at the 'North Pole' and upon exiting the train, each child will receive their own silver bell, just like in the movie.

Blue Ridge Scenic Railroad

This year, the Santa Express will be open for photo opportunities only, although the Santa Pavillion is currently open for four-hour train rides from Georgia to Tennessee. Kids will have the chance to see Santa and Mrs. Claus, as well as experiencing the incredible sights of winter in the Blue Ridge Mountains. When visiting the Santa Express, each child will be rewarded with a candy cane as well as a holiday bell.

Train Of Lights

The train going out of Niles in Fremont, California, is nothing short of magical this time of the year. The train itself is lit up to the nines, with holiday-themed lighting adorning the entire train, transforming it from an ordinary train car to something far more magical and wondrous. The train takes passengers through the Niles Canyon on an hour-long train ride, all the way passengers can observe the lightwork that's been done on both the inside and the outside of the cars. While the festivities have been canceled for 2020, those interested should keep an eye out for the 2021 season.
