East Corinth is a small town in Vermont with rural charm and picturesque scenery. Located around 25 miles southeast of Montpelier, East Corinth is also one of seven villages in Corinth - situated in Orange County, Vermont. Given its beauty and small-town vibe, Corinth and its quaint little villages are some of the most photographed spots in New England for fall foliage. However, it's not just the pretty scenery this speck on the Vermont map offers; East Corinth is also a fantastic family-friendly ski resort town in the winter. In fact, it's the longest continually running ski town in the United States.
The area also provides a series of stunning hiking trails - but conventional activities and attractions in Corinth and its sub-villages aren't what this feature is about. What really makes the tiny village of East Corinth a notable place for many is this: it's the home of the one and only Beetlejuice - the shady starring character of the movie of the same name who took the spook-loving world by storm back in the eighties. The funky, spooks-meets-humor flick quickly became a cult hit, with droves of fans pondering whether the kitsch, fictional little town seen in the movie is a real place. Moreover, fans loved the characterful house in the film so much that they were left with the all-important question: where is the Beetlejuice house?

Where Was Beetlejuice Filmed?
- Beetlejuice was filmed in the small town of East Corinth, Vermont.
The brilliant buffoon of a character's official home is in East Corinth, Vermont - one of Vermont's beautiful small towns seemingly off the radar. In 1988, Tim Burton directed this fun-freaky classic, which was partially shot in the town center of East Corinth. This dark comedy film features the Maitlands - a recently deceased couple played by Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis. After they died in a gnarly car accident, the couple discovers their home is “haunted” by the very living Deetz family, who purchased it after their demise.
Frustrated with the bureaucracy plaguing passed-on souls in the afterlife and their inability to scare the unwelcome family away from their home, the ghost couple consult the expertise of a bio-exorcist, who claims to be versed in the art of removing the living from dead people's properties. That bio-exorcist calls himself Beetlejuice - a lewd, eccentric, and uncontrollable mischief-maker donned in a striped suit played by iconic actor Michael Keaton.
Is The Town In Beetlejuice Real?
- The town where the movie Beetlejuice was filmed is real.
- Many of the movie's sets, however, are no longer in existence.
The Beetlejuice town is indeed a real place. The movie was set in the fictional village of Winter River, Connecticut; however, all the outdoor film scenes took place in East Corinth, Vermont. The main street bisecting the town also goes by most of the film's featured locations.
Is The Beetlejuice House Real?
- The house/set of Beetlejuice was not real, but instead, a facade built in East Corinth.
The house in Beetlejuice isn't real per se. The 1980s Victorian-style house shown in the movie was a facade built on-site for filming. However, the hill where it was constructed does exist and can be seen on the main road at the downtown area's southern edge.
The film crew used the building's open interiors as a basketball court, while the 'roof' was a sagging painted canvas. During the filming of exterior scenes, the team pressurized the fake house with giant fans to puff the canvas roof up to look like a real one.
What Happened To The Beetlejuice House?
The house in Beetlejuice was pulled down after filming. Even though it no longer exists, visitors to the town can check out the hill on which it once sat. Visitors can get a closer view of the hill off Jewell Lane - the driveway to the farm on which the hill stands.
Can You Visit The Beetlejuice House?
The East Corinth Vermont Beetlejuice house is no more, so fans can't visit it, sadly (except for peeking at the hill where it stood). Still, plenty of other parts of the town were used in the movie and are still standing today, which visitors can see in person.
Other Beetlejuice Filming Locations
- Beetlejuice mainly took place in East Corinth, with notable existing places being Chicken Farm Road, along Route 25, Mason Hall, and the downtown area.
While the Beetlejuice house in East Corinth is long gone, many of the other town buildings that appeared in the film still remain for fans to relive this iconic spooky comedy. The bridge where the Maitlands suffer the car accident that ends their lives still exists. During filming, the bridge wasn't all that sophisticated; it was merely a few planks and a pair of guardrails. Today, however, it’s a modern concrete bridge and can be found on Chicken Farm Road, near where the street intersects with Village Road - but it isn't a covered bridge, as shown in the movie. The bridge's cover was re-purposed, and now lives a few miles away at the Northeast Slopes ski area on Route 25.
Another town landmark that played a role in the movie was the town’s Mason Hall, which stood in for Lydia Dietz’s schoolhouse. Also, the local library makes an appearance, and the entire town can be seen in overview shots. A general store in the town also played a hardware store; however, the real store went out of business and underwent huge renovations.
