Nowadays, it seems like every vacation destination has a thorough list of do's and don't's for visiting. While some of them are over the top and common sense, there are others that are helpful. New Orleans has quite a reputation, from experiencing Mardi Gras to all the things one can see and do in the French Quarter. It's a great city to explore but also one that should come with some tips and tricks - especially for first-timers.

From where to spend time to things to avoid doing, here are all the things to (and not to) do in the great city of New Orleans.

Do: Food Is An Experience!

This needs no embellishment: The food in New Orleans is second to a religious experience. From po'boys to authentic beignets, the fusion of cajun and French cuisine is truly something to commit to when visiting New Orleans.

This, in combination with the city's year-round jass fest atmosphere, makes for a worthy experience and one that's truly Louisiana.

Don't: Be Aware And Alert On Bourbon Street, It's Easy To Get Carried Away

Bourbon Street can get pretty wild at times and though it's all too easy to party the night away, it's also something to avoid. With a party comes typical party faux pas, even in a place as popular as New Orleans. Experiencing Bourban Street is definitely a bucket list item, but it doesn't need to be one that takes up an entire night (or several).

Do: Explore the Garden District In Full

The Garden District, in stark contrast to Bourban Street, is far quieter and absolutely stunning. With historic architecture and quaint gardens in full bloom, there's no denying this is one of the prettiest parts of the city. It's a good way to explore New Orleans on foot without having to follow a guide or necessarily a map and can be a chill way to spend a morning with a cup of coffee and a beignet.

Don't: Falling For Gimmicks

New Orleans boasts psychics and palm readers around every corner, but that doesn't mean taking the first one up on their offer. For those who really want to experience this, a little bit of research goes a long way, and it's okay to say "no" the first time - there will be plenty more chances to have palms read and futures predicted.

Do: Take The Spookier Tours And Historic Walks

This is half the fun of New Orleans! This city's history and culture also boast a bit of a spooky atmosphere, and it's truly an experience to learn about it all first-hand. This is where guided tours and historic walks can be a great place to spend some time. Even stopping into some of the city's creepier stores, such as voodoo shops or even vampire boutiques (yes, they exist!) are just enough to give a Southern Gothic edge to any New Orleans trip.

Don't: Go To Cafe du Monde During The Busiest Time Of The Day

Cafe du Monde should definitely be part of the itinerary, but that doesn't mean it needs to be sought out during the busiest time of day - AKA the early morning hours. What starts out as an exciting visit to one of New Orlean's premier bakeries can quickly become chaotic and rushed when battling with the early-morning crowd for some coffee and beignets.
