The little hamlet of Wilmington is located on the wonderful AuSable River in the shade of Whiteface Mountain, the fifth-highest peak in New York, and has a picture-postcard setting inside the thickly forested Adirondack Mountains. The AuSable River is equally spectacular as it flows through ravines and crashes over waterfalls and cascades on its way to Lake Champlain in the northeast. The greatest views are on an exceptional hike that traverses bridges and catwalks around and over High Falls Gorge, although Flume Falls is also lovely. Unmarked routes along the astonishing river lead to ledges with panoramas of the valley.

A visit to Santa's Workshop is also a necessary stop when visiting Wilmington for individuals who would like a leisurely activity. The Christmas-themed attraction has live entertainment, real reindeer, artisan stores, kiddie rides, fictional characters from books, and Santa Claus. Tourists can start planning their trip to Santa’s North Pole Workshop immediately because it is never too early for this dreamy vacation.

Discover The History Of Santa’s Workshop

When his little daughter pleaded with him to take her to Santa's vacation residence in the 1940s, Julian Reiss, an entrepreneur from Lake Placid, had the inspiration for Santa's Workshop.

Reiss, frustrated that he could not grant her wish, purchased some hilly woodland close to Whiteface Mountain, a popular tourist destination at the time. He collaborated on preliminary sketches with Arto Monaco.

Santa's Workshop was constructed, and its icy doors were flung wide on July 1, 1949, with no further planning. Santa’s Workshop was one of its kind, therefore both adults and children enjoyed it.

The park's always frozen "North Pole" and the sheep, goats, and deer that roamed freely amid its beautifully painted log cabin structures, transforming it into the first petting zoo in the world, were what drew people there rather than Santa Claus.

The workshop now has its own zip code, 12946, gifted by the US Postal Service. Numerous imitators were inspired by its popularity, which is why Santa lands can still be found today all throughout the United States.

Early in the 1950s, Disney planners came here to research the phenomena because they were developing their own theme park at the time.
