Perhaps one of the greatest on the go and comfort foods ever created, Pop-Tarts have been gracing pantry shelves for the better half of a century. Originating as toaster pastries, these were designed to give kids a delicious sugar high before starting their day while saving time in the kitchen and, by extension, minimizing the daily morning rush. Now, there are more than 20 flavors of pop tarts out there along with seasonal flavors that make their appearance once a year. With so many needing a little childhood comfort food lately, it was time to sit down and definitively rank the best of the best, the most popular options, in order to figure out which one is still the reigning king of flavors.

Be forewarned, though: The top contender might be a surprise!

Frosted Fudge

While it's not the most popular flavor, it is in the top ten - the Frosted Fudge Pop-Tart was a welcome, albeit super dessert-style, option for chocolate lovers. With a chocolate crust and a decadent chocolate filling, this was a great way to break up the monotony that can sometimes happen with fruit flavor after fruit flavor. It wasn't too sweet but felt like it could have been and that alone made a full two Pop-Tart-serving bearable. For those who didn't love chocolate when this came out, well... stick with the fruit.

Pretzel Cinnamon Sugar

Two combinations that seemed highly unlikely in a Pop-Tart finally came together for this burst of sweet and salty (and ever so slightly spicy) flavor. The balance of salt from the pretzel meshed perfectly with the cinnamon sugar filling and it was like nothing Pop-Tart lovers had ever experienced. It definitely makes the top ten but for some, it makes the top five or even the top spot.

Strawberry Milkshake

Far maltier than the traditional strawberry flavor, the addition of Strawberry Milkshake basically eliminated the need to have a glass of milk with Pop-Tarts. However, the only downside of this flavor was that it tasted a bit unbalanced when toasted, considering the flavor itself was meant to imply a cold milkshake. Regardless, it was a delicious combination and definitely an upgrade to the classic berry flavors.

Cherry

Many were thanking the Pop-Tart gods for this one since most cherry-flavored things come down to a medicinal, unpleasant flavor. However, Cherry Pop-Tarts were pleasantly sweet and so delicious, and the frosting that adorned the top didn't feel too sweet like it did others (ahem, blueberry). In fact, it was a good competition for the original strawberry and caused many a Pop-Tart lover to switch teams when it hit the shelves.

Chocolate Chip

It could be argued that this was even better than a chocolate chip cookie. Having a Chocolate Chip Pop-Tart for breakfast was the equivalent to getting away with a crime since it was basically like eating dessert for breakfast. the balance of chocolate with what resembled cookie dough was utter perfection, and the slightly savory pastry helped to bring it all together in the perfect bite.

S'mores

It was the best of both worlds without all the mess and is still one of the highest-ranking Pop-Tarts out there. Not surprisingly, many would opt for this toaster pastry over actual s'mores, as the flavors melded together to create the perfect blend of marshmallow, chocolate, and better-than-graham-pastry. When broken open, the layers of chocolate and marshmallow were beautiful and made our mouths water in anticipation.

Frosted Strawberry

Is it a surprise that Frosted Strawberry is not the top contending Pop-Tart? Perhaps. Regardless, it made the top three, and that's saying quite a lot for an original flavor. It's not uncommon for other newer, more edgy flavors to overtake the first and only, but Frosted Strawberry has put up a good fight so far - plus, it's still the best Pop-Tart when it's toasted.

Frosted Raspberry

Coming in at the number two spot is Frosted Raspberry which, for some reason, is so much more well-loved than Frosted Strawberry. As Pop-Tarts made their rounds through the berries, raspberry took centerstage with the perfect balance of both tart and sweet. It was different, diverse, and a bold move for a toaster pastry, especially following the success of strawberry which is the usual favorite. With the same frosting as the rest, the defining factor was, indeed, the delicious raspberry filling, which crushed the competition of all the berries to follow.

Brown Sugar Cinnamon

And the top spot goes to Brown Sugar Cinnamon. Was it really a surprise that a breakfast toaster pastry with a classic brown sugar flavor is still the most loved flavor? Probably not. However, it is surprising that it won't out over every berry flavor, and that can only be attributed to its brown sugar frosting and cinnamon interior. Everything about this Pop-Tart, toasted or not, screams comfort, childhood, breakfast, and, well, pure toaster pastry love.
