The ocean is still wholly unexplored and contrary to every documentary about the underwater world, there are still many things that remain undiscovered. The mysteries of the deep aren't always as easily explainable as those on solid ground, and that's something scientists are continuing to discover.

While strange things often surface from the ocean's depths, there are even mysteries that meet us at the shore and are still unexplained. Water works in unique ways and when it comes to the marine life that lives in it, we don't always have all the answers. To add to that intrigue, it takes highly specialized equipment to even see what lies at the deepest parts of the ocean - much of which is still unknown and unseen to the human eye. So, as of 2020, what mysteries are we still seeking answers to?

Giant Squid

The elusive Giant Squid has been much of a mystery for decades now. Centuries of artwork depict a giant sea monster, known as a Kraken, attacking entire ships and threatening the lives of the crew but there has never been any definitive proof one way or the other for its actual existence.

Between 2004 and 2012, it was believed that a Giant Squid was captured on camera in the Pacific Ocean. This squid seemed to attack the boat of the people who captured it on film in one instance, however, it was never brought to the surface. Not much else is known about this rare species of squid although efforts have been made to seek it out. While it does seem to exist in some form, it's impossible to say whether or not it would ever see the light of the ocean's surface.

Underwater Geology

That's right - things such as underwater "waterfalls" and salt composition all factor into a body of water's geology, and much of it still unknown. The ocean is massive and as expansive as it is, it would be impossible to explore every inch of it in one lifetime.

Differences in water temperatures create phenomena that appear to make some sections of water move around others in strange ways (i.e. the waterfall effect), while geological features such as underwater volcanos exist and can actually erupt. All of these things are still undergoing research, even to this day.

The Milky Sea Phenomenon

While many people have seen photos or videos of this phenomenon, it's still widely unexplained. This strange glow that's emitted from what was believed to be bioluminescent bacteria still has no concrete explanation.

Scientists can only speculate that the glow comes from this specific bacteria, but the mystery lies in the fact that it's bright enough to be seen from outer space. Furthermore, the length and consistency of the glow lead scientists to believe whatever is causing isn't dinoflagellates, organisms that were previously thought to produce this aura.

Mysterious Purple Orbs

These orbs, while beautiful, are still without explanation. The process to obtain one wasn't simple, either - scientists actually had to duel with a crab in order to retrieve the specimen.

The purple orb was presumed to be some type of jellyfish species or even a tiny octopus or an egg sac, but none of that was confirmed. Now, the theory is that it's a new type of snail species - confirming the fact that we still don't have any idea of how many animals are still undiscovered in our oceans.
