While there have been many speculations regarding the origins of Atlantis, some history buffs have claimed that perhaps the Giant’s Graves found in Sardinia, Italy might just hold the clues to the mysterious civilization of Atlantis, which has disappeared abruptly. But what were these Giant’s Graves? And were they really connected to the lost civilization of Atlantis? Read on to find out.

Who Built The Giant Graves In Italy?

Tucked in the western coast of Sardinia, the rugged Mont’e Prama is a region lauded with the mystery of a past civilization that has puzzled many curious minds. Back in 1974 a Sardinian farmer accidentally discovered a giant stone head with double-carved eyes while plowing his field. From this point, the region garnered much attention from archeologists who excavated the land several times. They discovered thousands of fragments of limestone blocks, including dozens of giant statues, which were originally carved in local sandstone and measure up to 7 feet tall. These statues were intricately designed, for instance, they all have triangular faces, T-shaped eyebrows, and noses, but the most distinct features are their eyes, which are typically designed in round concentric circles staring straight ahead. Interestingly, some of them were holding shields or bows. Archeologists have categorized them as archers, boxers, and warriors. These statues were originally painted and traces of colors have been recovered on some of them. For example, one archer was excavated with a red-painted chest.

With further excavations, other structures were recovered at the site including the megalithic buildings and many Baetylus sacred stones used in the making of the Giant’s Graves. Baetylus were considered to be sacred stones that were endowed with life and gave access to a deity. As per historical records, these objects are thought to be meteorites dedicated to the gods and were revered as ‘symbols of the gods themselves.' Thanks to the work of Sardinian archeologist Giovanni Lilliu, who was able to connect the missing link. He claimed that these excavated artifacts shared many traits with the bronze statuettes of the Nuragic civilization in Sardinia, which flourished between the 18th and 8th centuries B.C. (between the Final Bronze Age and the beginning of the Iron Age). The Nuragic civilization aced in metal and stone works. They constructed megalithic structures known as Nuraghi. There are over 6000 Nuraghi scattered across the island. During the end of the Bronze Age, the Nuragic civilization faced many social transformations and consequently, they were no longer building graves.

The Giant’s Graves In Sardinia

One of the important discoveries made by the archeologists was the necropolis (monumental cemetery) perched on the slopes of Mont’e Prama. The graveyard is made of wall tombs and is composed of two main types of areas notably the parallelepiped-shaped which was uncovered by archeologist Alessandro Bedino in 1975, and the second was a serpentine-shaped grave excavated between 1976 and 1979 by Maria Ferrarese Ceruti. The discovered skeletons at the burial site were found in a sitting or crouching position with their backs facing east in their own individual pit. Most of the skeletons were males aged between 15 and 42 years old. And with close inspection, archeologists have found that the male skeletons presented distinctive elements of strength, for instance, their femurs showed signs that they were involved in intense physical activities, which included twisting and bending their thighs. And thus they might have been fighters or athletes who may have played a religious role at that time.

Speculations About The Giants Of The Ancient Sardinia

Locals who lived close to the excavated areas were always fascinated by the ancient ruins. And there have been many speculations and debates regarding the unusual size of the graves found in Mont’e Prama. Many have argued that the Giant’s Graves might have been used by the ‘Fallen Angels’ who are believed to have mated with human females. There are many Christian and Pagan myths regarding this theory, but one astonishing testimony has created much debate among history buffs. Luigi Muscas, a local Sardinian discovered a mummified giant at the ancient site when he was just ten years old at that time. He has written many a book with many similar testimonies about the giants.

His skin was the same color as mine. He has all his teeth, none one of them was missing…I wasn’t even surprised to find him there, and only confirmed what my relatives had always told me, we were the descendants of the Giants. - Luigi Muscas
