Telluride is one of the boom towns of the Colorado Rockies that managed to reinvent itself as an upmarket alpine and ski destination. In some ways, it is similar to the celebrity destination of Aspen. Telluride has unadulterated views of the Rockies and is a year-round destination being a great hiking destination in the summer and a great ski resort destination in the winter. Much of the historic center of the town has survived (as has its notable Wild West stories).

2 Juneau, Alaska

Returning to Alaska, perhaps no state capital has as breathtaking views as Juneau (nor is it as isolated as there is no road access to the city). It is nestled at the base of Mount Juneau, just across the channel from Douglas Island.
