Japan is full of fun goodies for those who are new to exploring its many adventurous avenues (literally, if they're in Tokyo) and that doesn't exclude food. The country is essentially a culinary monster with many dishes that must be tried during a visit but luckily, some of Japans's best snacks can be found worldwide. Japan is also known for some slightly unusual foods but don't worry - these snacks are only the best for 2020.

From sweet to savory and everything in between, Japan is slaying the snack game once again and these are all the things that are totally worth finding.

Kinoko no Yama

Some might recognize these from the international aisle in convenience stores. They're tiny, slightly sweet biscuits (think butter or a shortbread cookie) that are covered in the smallest amount of chocolate.

They do come in different shapes but one of the most popular is the mushroom-shaped candies, although they're more chocolate-covered biscuits than candy, regardless of the aisle they're found in. The reason these are so good is that they're not overwhelmingly sweet and provide just enough satisfying that will keep you full in between meals, but also enough sweetness that will curve a sweet tooth when it comes to this or an actual piece of candy.

Calbee Jagariko

Calbee Jagariko is widely popular in Japan and for those who are visiting because they're the perfect simple snack to grab on the go.

They come in travel-friendly cups and are easy to eat since they're basically stick-like biscuits but it's the flavors that really have people craving these snacks. They can be found flavored as anything from cheese to salt and lemon and even salad-flavored, although butter and soy sauce is another popular one.

Pocky In Any Flavor

Pocky has made an appearance worldwide and in 2020, it's still one of the most popular snacks from Japan. Now, Pocky comes in all types of flavors, from matcha to banana and everything in between.

Japan is home to the world of Pocky flavors although many can now be found throughout the US and North America. They can also be ordered online (as can all of these snacks), making them the perfect sweet treat for mornings when breakfast or lunch just isn't cutting it. Not to mention, they're great in coffee and tea.

Shiroi Koibito

The closest thing to Shiroi Koibito are Milano cookies. These biscuits have a similar shortbread exterior but smashed in between two of them is the thinnest layer of white chocolate.

Japan is home to some pretty sweet treats but it's the snacks that aren't overwhelmingly sweet and combine different textures and flavors that really make an impression. The mixed box of these is the best, as they come with a couple of flavors that allow you to try each individually, as they're also individually-wrapped.

Umaibo Japanese Corn Puffs

Dare we say these are better than Cheetos? Japan has its version of corn puff snacks as well and Umaibo is undoubtedly the best. Traditionally a snack that's tailored for kids, these corn puffs come in vibrant and fun packages and are also great to eat on the go or for lunch.

They also come in many flavors and since the packages are fairly small, it's easy enough to get a variety pack and try them all... we guarantee you won't be able to pick just one favorite.

Wasabi Pistachios

For fans of the original wasabi peas, we now bring you wasabi pistachios! There's something about the way that a super salty pistachio mixes with the sudden heat of wasabi and these are overwhelmingly popular in Japan.

They can be found in many markets throughout the country but can now also be purchased online (thankfully!) because we simply can't get enough of them. They're not too spicy but definitely pack a bit of a punch which is great, because what is wasabi without the heat?

Hello Panda

Of course, this list would not be complete without a visit from Hello Panda. These delicious biscuits are the opposite of many others as their fillings are actually found on the inside of these tiny cookies. They also come in different flavors such as chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, and even matcha.

The cookies themselves have prints of the most adorable pandas on them, thus the name, and they're super fun to eat. They also come in fun, uniquely-shaped packages and inside of those, the cookies are kept in foil bags, so they'll keep for a bit before they get stale. Luckily, they can be found in most stores throughout North America nowadays, but can also be found online pretty easily, too.
