Summer can't be passed by without attending some stellar summer music festivals. With rockin' tunes from some of your favorite artists in a cool party environment, music festivals are some of the most popular go-to destinations when the weather heats up. You've probably heard of the really popular ones like Coachella, Bonnaroo, and Woodstock, but there are actually tons more!
Spanning almost every genre of music, there are music festivals geared towards everyone out there. Check out our list below of some summer music festivals you may not have heard of, and see if you can nab some tickets to attend this year!
Outside Lands will be returning to Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, California for it's 11th year in a row. From August 9th to 11th, this festival will have what they call an "eclectic" line-up of performers.
This is an apt description, with 2019 headliners ranging from Paul Simon to Childish Gambino to Twenty One Pilots. Other performers in this year's line-up include The Lumineers, Flume, blink-182, Kygo, Anderson.Paak & The Free Nationals, Leon Bridges, Kacey Musgraves, Lil Wayne, and many many more! The festival will also feature local art, food, and drinks.
As you can tell from the name, the Country LakeShake Festival is for country music fans! The festival is celebrating it's 5th anniversary this year and will be held at Huntington Bank Pavilion in Chicago from June 21st to June 23rd.
Headliners include country music favorites like Miranda Lambert, Keith Urban, and Luke Bryan -- and that's just a fraction of the line-up. There will also be plenty of places at the festival to buy food, drinks, and cowboy hats! Other activities include a vector swing and silent disco line dancing.
Brought to you by Essence Magazine, this music festival will be in New Orleans, Louisiana from July 4th to July 7th. Headliners include Missy Elliot, Mary J. Blige, Pharrell Williams, H.E.R, and plenty of other game-changers in the hip-hop and R&B industries. Oh, and another big name will be there who, while not from the music industry, will still certainly be recognizable -- former First Lady Michelle Obama.
The festival, which will be held at the Mercedes Benz Superdome, will be celebrating it's 25th anniversary this year. Alongside it's music line-up, there will also be separate festivals for food and celebrating various aspects of black culture.
Held in the woodlands of Dover, Delaware, attendees are able to bring a tent to camp-out and party together. This year's festival will be held from June 21st to June 23rd, and the headliners will be from a diverse range of genres.
Check out Panic! at the Disco on the 21st, Travis Scott on the 22nd, and Post Malone on the 23rd. Others in the line-up include Tyler The Creator, Zedd, Kygo, Death Cab for Cutie, Passion Pit, Vampire Weekend, and DJ Snake among dozens and dozens more. If you're up for a night of nature and alternative music, check this festival out.
Another one for the country fans! Held in Brooklyn, Michigan from July 19th to the 21st, headliners of Faster Horses will be the hottest of stars in the country genre like Keith Urban, Toby Keith, and Zac Brown Band.
Like Firefly, this festival also features camping, but with more of a southern twist! If you're a huge country music fan and the Country LakeShake festival doesn't work out for you, you can always try out this one -- or attend both! You'll recognize a lot of the same music artists performing at both festivals.
Afropunk Fest was created to showcase all forms of creativity from black artists -- including music, of course! Held at Commodore Barry Park in Brooklyn on August 24th and 25th, this year's line-up includes Jill Scott, FKA Twigs, Leon Bridges, and tons more.
There will also be an Afropunk festival in Paris on July 13th and 14th, with acts like Solange, Janelle Monae, and Lizzo. The Atlanta one will be held on October 12 and 13th with acts like Anderson .Paak, FKA Twigs, and Earthgang. And finally, there is a version in South Africa in December. So you have options!
The Made In America Festival, held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on August 31st and September 1st, will be the perfect send-off for the summer. Travis Scott and Cardi B serve as the main headliners, but other huge artists performing include, Juice Wrld, James Blake, Lizzo, Lil Uzi Vert, Gucci Mane, and much much more.
Another cool thing about this festival is that it has a "Cause Village," where charities and non-profits spanning a multitude of issues are there to educate and accept donations. Around 15,000 social actions are taken annually at Cause Village.
Created by Pitchfork Media, the Pitchfork Music Festival will be held this year from July 19th to July 21st at Union Park in Chicago, Illinois. Pitchfork Media is known for its music reviews, so you can bet that only the best of each genre will be playing at their festival.
Artists performing this year include Haim, Mavis Staples, Pusha-T, Earl Sweatshirt, Sky Ferreira, The Isley Brothers, Belle & Sebastian, Robyn, Charli XCX, and a bunch more. There will also be plenty of vendors where you can learn about some of the best of Chicago's local businesses. In addition, there's a Kids Zone if you need a break from the little ones!
Mo Pop Festival will be held in Detroit, Michigan on July 27th and 28th at West Riverfront Park. The line-up, which has been referred to in the past as "niche and boutique," always features a little something for everyone, no matter what your taste is.
This year's performers include Lizzo, Tame Impala, Vampire Weekend, Ella Mai, King Princess, and more. There will also be plenty of food trucks, dance parties, arcade games, and handmade goods among a plethora of other options for the best of Detroit cuisine and drinks.
Longitude Festival at Marlay Park in Dublin, Ireland will be held from July 5th to July 7th this year. With artists like Cardi B, A$AP Rocky, Brockhampton, Chance the Rapper, Future, Joey Purp, Juice Wrld, Lil Uzi Vert, Rae Sremmurd, Trippie Redd, and Vince Staples, this festival is sure to be a good time.
This is arguably one of the biggest outdoor festivals in Ireland, so expect plenty of food and drink vendors. Prepare to party and get the most out of your summer!
