As a landlocked state, Arkansas isn't the first place many people think of in regard to island destinations. While the island in question isn't one that's comparable to those in the Great Lakes or full of resorts like those in Florida, it is one that makes for an exciting Arkansas destination.

Sugar Loaf Mountain Island is located in the center of Greers Ferry Lake and is home to one of two Sugar Loaf Mountains in the Ozarks. However, one mountain is Sugar Loaf and the other is Sugarloaf - one word - which makes the differentiation between the island and the landlocked mountain somewhat confusing.

For this Arkansas island adventure, the island near Fairfield Bay is the one we'll be scouting out.

Sugar Loaf Mountain Island In Greers Ferry Lake

The summit of Sugar Loaf Mountain Island reaches an elevation of roughly 1,000 feet and, yes, it can be hiked! While we'll get to its scenic hiking trails later, this island offers much more for nature lovers in Arkansas. The first step to visiting this island, though, is knowing how to get there, since it's only accessible via boat.

Getting To Sugar Loaf Mountain Island

In Greers Ferry Lake, visitors can find the Fairfield Bay Marina which is the only marina operating a ferry shuttle service to and from the island. This ferry takes visitors almost straight to the start of the trailhead on the island so for those planning on hiking it, there are no further directions necessary. The ferry takes reservations and passengers can call in advance for the day they plan to visit.

Additionally, those who are truly spirited (and experienced in kayaking) can rent or bring their own kayaks to make the trek across the bay to the island. The total distance from the marina boat launch to Sugar Loaf Mountain Island is about a mile and a half.

What To Do On Sugar Loaf Mountain Island

Once arriving at the island, there are multiple ways to enjoy its nature and beautiful landscape. On the ferry ride over, passengers can take in the views of the Ozark foothills, and the views continue once arriving at the island dock.

Hiking On Sugar Loaf

Those interested in taking the trek across (and up) this mountain island can indulge in several hiking trails. After leaving the ferry or finding a spot to park one's kayak, visitors will be greeted with two separate hiking trails. These vary in length, with the shorter trail spanning a distance of 1.6 miles and the other leading up to a loop at the summit of Sugar Loaf Mountain, going on for a total of roughly 2.5 miles.

For those seeking the best views, fear not - both of these trails offer stunning vantage points from which to take in the Arkansas Ozarks. Just because one is easier and shorter doesn't mean that the views are any less significant! However, for full birds-eye views of Sugar Loaf and the Ozarks, the longer summit trail is a surefire way to get them.

  • Tip: Both hiking trails are rated as 'moderate' difficulty

Along the way, hikers will get panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, the lake below, and will have the chance to observe the flora and fauna of the Ozarks lowlands. This island is also home to the country's first designated National Scenic Trails. At the end of the shorter (1.6-mile) hike, hikers will be greeted with a set of stairs that lead to amazing views of the Greers Ferry Lake from 500 feet above the water.

  • Fact: The rocks that form Sugar Loaf Mountain Island are estimated to be roughly 300 million years old.

Photography & Wildlife-Watching

The island is also a haven for wildlife, and hikers have the chance to witness some of the most protected ecosystems in the state. Sugar Loaf Mountain Island serves as a game refuge, and it's not uncommon to watch deer travel the island to the mainland. Rare bird species, such as the Bald Eagle, have also been known to fly above and around the island, making for an incredible photo opportunity. When observing the lake from above, visitors to the island will have some of the best views from which to watch the region's fauna.

Those visiting the Ozarks might not even know that Sugar Loaf Mountain Island exists, but it's well worth the visit. Getting a ride on the ferry is the easiest part and with two scenic trails to consider, it makes for a perfect day trip outing for nature lovers. If nothing else, it's the perfect getaway for those wanting a tranquil spot to sit back and watch the water for a while.
