It might not be the northernmost point on the map in terms of living in the 'North Pole,' but Lapland, Finland, is pretty dang far north. Bordering Sweden and being the northernmost part of its area of the continent, Lapland has long been hailed as the official home of Santa Claus, and it's been that way for some time now. While Nunavut, Canada, is actually the northernmost inhabited place in the world, Lapland is far more inviting with its magical winter wonderland-esque landscape and festive Christmas spirit. Lapland is located within the Arctic Circle and, specifically, is the small village - called Santa Claus Village - in Rovaniemi that's referred to as Santa's permanent home.

Surprisingly, it's also one of the most visited destinations in Finland and is open to visitors year-round where they can see Santa and his elves in action at the workshop. Among other attractions such as the famed ICEHOTEL and the SnowCastle is this Christmas wonderland, and it definitely does not disappoint!

What To Do In Santa Claus Village

Getting to meet Santa comes at no cost to visitors and he can be found at the Christmas House, which is appropriately-named considering who it houses! Here, visitors have the chance for a photo op with Santa himself and also have the chance to purchase a one of a kind greeting card, straight from Santa's Workshop. That's not all the Santa Claus Village has to offer, though - Mrs. Santa Claus' Christmas Cottage is also a must-see. This attraction is still fairly new and it's located in the Santa Claus Reindeer Resort. At the Cottage, visitors have the chance to meet Mrs. Claus and create personalized souvenirs with her and the elves. This Cottage is warm and welcoming and everything that a Christmas Cottage should be, and Mrs. Claus is nothing short of what one would expect from the wife of the man in red! At the Reindeer Resort, visitors also have the chance to visit with the reindeer in the summer and ride them in the winter.

Right in the center of town, visitors will find Santa Claus Office, which is open daily. In fact, it hasn't closed for a single day since 1992!  This is where all the magic happens and where visitors will get a glimpse into the fairly high-tech world of Santa and his work. They'll have the chance to see the Rotational Speed Regulator up close, which is one of the secrets of how Santa is able to make it to so many homes, so quickly and easily, over the course of one night. To visit Santa in his office is free, however, the elves will be capturing the moment for you behind the scenes, and these photos and videos are available for purchase after each group leaves.

Normally, a post office wouldn't seem all that exciting - unless, of course, you have the chance to visit one that belongs to Santa Claus Village. The Santa Claus Main Post Office is full of its own magic and is run by the postal elves who are just waiting to brighten everyone's day with a smile and a burst of holiday cheer. Here, visitors can peruse and purchase festive gifts such as postcards, stamps, and souvenirs. There's even a spot within the post office where visitors can take the time to write to their family and friends on the festive card of their choosing, detailing all the magic they've encountered in the North Pole. When they're done, the postal elves will whisk away any and all letters in order to have them in the North Pole post as soon as possible. In order to make every piece of mail even more special, the elves stamp each and every one with the Arctic Circle seal in order to ensure its distinction in the mail. For those who choose not to write a letter personally, there is an option to have Santa write a letter for them and send it to the recipient of their choosing - it'll get there by Christmas!

During a time when the world could use a little more magic than normal, it's nice to know a place like this exists - there's no harm in believing, right?
