While we hear plenty of rumors about Amsterdam (cough, Red Light District) we are happy to report that this city is so much more than red lights and adult indulgences. While it is known for those things, there's plenty to see, do, and experience that doesn't include anything that would be illegal in other countries. With that being said, there are some areas that are a bit less satisfying for wanderlust travelers than others.

For starters, Amsterdam, as a whole, is a safe place to visit. However, there are some areas that are a bit less enjoyable, whether it be due to local crime, concrete jungles, or just the fact that there's not a lot worth seeing.

Just to be extra safe in your travels, here are the safest locations - and who they're safe for - and some areas that you might just want to pass on booking a stay in.

15 Safe To Stay For Sight-Seers: Old Centrum

Old Centrum combines old-world charm with modern amenities, and there's plenty to see in this historic part of Amsterdam. If you can swing it and are interested in the history and local lore, this is a great part of Amsterdam to consider staying in (and around) while you explore.

14 Safe To Stay Near The Transportation: Zuid

For those who need to be close to the airport or transportation, Zuid is a great option to consider. There are plenty of fun things to do and see here, all within a reasonable distance to the airport. It's a great option for an overnight layover or even for a short weekend trip if that's more your speed.

13 Be Aware: Bijlmer

Bijlmer, just like many of the other lesser-recommended locations on this list, is on the outskirts of Amsterdam. We're not saying it's entirely unsafe to walk through, but we definitely wouldn't feel comfortable doing it alone. It's not a necessary tourist attraction, and we'd likely avoid it.

12 Safe To Stay With The Fam: Oost

Oost is classic in its atmosphere but offers plenty for families; it's walking-friendly (good for little legs) and there are plenty of places to stop in and chill for some downtime. Overall, it's a family-friendly environment that you wouldn't expect in Amsterdam but is lovely nevertheless.

11 Safe To Stay For An Adults-Only Trip: Oud-Zuid

For a more adult trip, Oud-Zuid is likely going to do it for you. If you're looking to experience all the ins and outs of Amsterdam and don't mind the more, ahem, 'traditional' aspect of the city, then this is a great central locale to base yourself if you plan on doing some exploring.

10 Be Aware: Osdorp

Osdorp isn't as pretty as the rest of the city, as it's another part of Amsterdam that lies on the outskirts. While it's not necessarily dangerous, per se, there are parts of Amsterdam where pick-pockets and street dealers are more common, and you're likely to find them further from crowded city streets.

9 Safe To Stay For Cheap: Haarlem (Not That Harlem)

In stark contrast to New York City's Harlem, the Haarlem in Amsterdam is bright, inviting, and fun for those who don't mind a bit of walking. Its open spaces allow for easy orienting, and the best part? It's relatively affordable to stay in this part of Amsterdam, leaving your budget open for more things.

8 Safe To Stay For Night Owls: Leidseplein

One thing that is true about Amsterdam is the fact that its nightlife can be pretty intense. However, for those who are into that sort of thing on vacation, look no further than Leidseplein.

This after-hours location comes with the promise of a good time, so make sure to fit in a daytime nap beforehand.

7 Be Aware: Reigersbos

Reigersbos isn't as welcoming as other parts of Amsterdam, and as an outskirts town, is very local in its atmosphere. There's not much to see here and not much reason to include this in your trip, and if you're not familiar with the area or the layout, it can be a bit nerve-wracking to get around.

6 Safe To Stay For Local Charm: De Pijp

De Pijp is cute and understated and counts as a town with serious local charm. This is a good place to slow down and unwind while taking in all that the quieter side of Amsterdam has to offer. It's a good option for those who don't necessarily need to be around the hustle and bustle of the center city.

5 Safe To Stay For Romance: Canal Belt

Just the name 'Canal Belt' sounds romantic. While it evokes serious Venice vibes, this Amsterdam spot is very different. With pretty waterscapes and plenty of places to sit down for a sweet, cozy lunch on the water, this is a nice place for couples to book a vacay while enjoying each other's company and the sights.

4 Be Aware: Geuzenveld

While it's close to transportation, this town doesn't offer more to tourists than the other, more popular towns.

This neighborhood is in the western part of Amsterdam and two years ago saw some pretty serious crime that was enough to close down two local cafes.

3 Safe To Travel With Kids: Plantage

Plantage is another family-friendly location in Amsterdam that offers plenty to see in a day's walk. This neighborhood is even home to the Natura Artis Magistra Zoo, so if you're really at a loss for what to do with the kids, that's a great way to pass some time and visit some cool animals.

2 Safe To Stay On A Short Trip: Centraal

The reason this is such a good place to stay on a short trip is that it's home to the Centraal Train Station (pictured). This station is the largest in the Netherlands and travels internationally, making it a great asset for those who are making their way around Europe or backpacking.

1 Be Aware: Slotervaart

Built fairly recently in terms of European standards, Slotervaart only became a residential hub in the 1950s as part of the General Development Plan. It is close to Rembrandtpark, but it's also devoid of much besides the Slotervaartziekenhuis hospital and the Netherlands Cancer Institute.
