Taking a solo trip is a rite of passage for many travelers; it gives them a chance to step out into the world independently and get in tune with their genuine likes, dislikes, and goals. Traveling solo is also a great way to meet and connect with like-minded individuals who share your passion for exploration and adventure. One of the most significant considerations when traveling solo is safety, which is why it’s important to pick destinations with existing tourism infrastructure and relatively low crime rates. According to a survey from VacationRenter, these are the safest places to travel solo, both in the US and abroad.

10 Domestic: New York City

53% of the 1,000 survey respondents felt New York City was a safe destination for solo travelers. The results indicated that novice travelers felt safer in New York City than more advanced travelers. Age, gender, and experience level all played a role in determining which US cities solo travelers felt the most at ease in. New York City was a popular choice for solo travelers across a wide range of age groups, ranking as a top choice for survey participants in the 18-24, 25-34, 35-44, 45-54, and 55+.

9 Domestic: Chicago

Chicago has a reputation for its relatively high crime rate, yet 44% of solo travelers who participated in the VacationRenter survey said it was their preferred choice for a solo trip within the United States. Interestingly, novice travelers listed it among their top three US cities for safe solo travel, while advanced travelers did not. Chicago maintained high popularity among all ages of survey participants, however, those aged 35-44 were the age group most likely to also consider it one of the safest cities to visit.

8 Domestic: Los Angeles

Los Angeles was deemed the safest city for solo travel in the United States by 33% of the VacationRenter survey participants. This California city of stars was most popular for solo travelers in the aged 55+ category. While Los Angeles ranked high in the survey for safety, it may lack popularity as a solo destination for younger travelers because it’s not a walkable city. Seeing Los Angeles is best done by renting a car.

7 Domestic: Washington D.C.

Washington D.C. tied for third place among US solo travel destinations, with 33% of participants suggesting they view this as a safe city to travel alone. Young people ages 25-34 were the most likely to view Washington as a safe city to spend time in. As the nation’s capital, it’s no wonder young people are traveling here. There is a rich history in the city and plenty of important political sites to visit including the Whitehouse, the Capitol, and the Library of Congress.

6 Domestic: Las Vegas

Las Vegas was another city tied for third place as survey respondents’ choice for the safest cities to travel solo in America, at 33%. Individuals in the 18-24 and 25-34 age groups put Las Vegas in their top three safest cities in the US for traveling alone. Those in the 35-44 age group felt that Denver was a safer city than Las Vegas, but those surveyed in the 45-54 age group ranked Las Vegas among their top three safe domestic travel destinations as well.

5 International: Canada

For international travel destinations that are safe for solo travelers, Canada was at the top of the list, at 53%. All age groups in the survey ranked Canada among the top three safest international travel destinations in the world. This is largely due to the global perception of Canada being a friendly, safe nation where police are trusted, and crime rates are low.

4 International: England

The second-best country for international solo travel is England, based on votes from 44% of respondents. Like Canada, travelers across all age categories indicated that England is in their top three safest countries to travel to alone. Not only is there excellent travel infrastructure in place in the United Kingdom, but English is the main language spoken making it easy for American travelers to navigate their way around and make new friends.

3 International: Germany

Germany was tied with France as the third-best international destination for solo travelers, with 26% of survey participants voting for it. Travelers ages 35-44 and 45-54 were the only age groups who selected Germany as one of the three safest countries to travel to solo around the world. Generally, Germany is a very safe European nation with tons of beautiful cities and charming fairy tale towns for travelers to explore. Bavaria is the German region with the lowest crime rates. While crime rates are higher in Berlin, train travel around Germany is fast and accessible, attracting solo backpackers from all over Europe.

1 International: Singapore

Unsurprisingly, many people (23%) participating in the VacationRenter survey indicated that Singapore is the best international travel destination for solo explorers. Those in the 25-34 age group ranked it third for safety for solo travelers, after Canada and England. The same is true for those in the 55+ category. Singapore is a small nation in Asia and is known as one of the safest countries in the entire world.

It has an extremely low crime rate, a reliable policy authority that offers trustworthy protection and responds to incidents promptly, and a stable political landscape. According to EDB Singapore, the country is ranked first in Asia for quality of living and second in the world for safety.
