A Rome subway escalator went berserk on Tuesday night, causing multiple serious injuries.
At least 20 people were hurt on Tuesday when a Roman subway escalator seemingly collapsed. Soccer fans on their way to a match between CKSA Moscow and Roma were all catapulted downward at extremely high speed, crushing those at the bottom.
"A group of CSKA fans were going down into the station. At that moment the escalator collapsed," a police spokesperson told a Russian news agency.
Firefighters say that at least seven people were seriously injured. According to the BBC, at least two required surgery for leg injuries, while one had his foot partially severed.
Footage shared on social media show the escalator suddenly accelerating out of control, slamming occupants into the floor of the subway and crushing those beneath. Some tried to escape by jumping on to the center divider, while spectators in the adjacent escalator tried to pull people to safety.
Many of the people injured were Russian fans visiting the city to watch their team, CSKA Moscow, play against Roma. The accident occurred before the planned Champions League match between the two teams.
Witnesses state that fans were singing and jumping on the escalator moments before it collapsed. Italian officials are currently investigating the incident.

Pictures circulating on social media show the escalator a twisted ball of metal, with cables and rubber straps point in every direction. Victims were carried away on stretchers before being taken to local hospitals by ambulance.
Roman officials state that the transport authority performs monthly maintenance checks on the subway escalators.
In a completely unrelated incident, a CSKA Moscow fan was slashed by a knife-wielding Roma fan outside the Stadio Olimpico before the match. Opposing sides of fans clashed in the lead up to the event, furthering tensions in the city and causing Rome to deploy additional police to ensure order was maintained.
Roma won the soccer match 3 to 0 after 90 after full-time had been called.
