Many who watched the 2006 James Bond movie Casino Royale starring Daniel Craig have been longing to go to Venice ever since. Many of the outdoor scenes were filmed in Venice following the high-stakes poker game at the Casino Royale in Montenegro. It was to the romantic canals of Venice that Agent 007 brought the newly found love of his life, Vesper Lynd (Eva Green). It is also where she died at the end of the movie leaving Bond heartbroken.

So just where was the movie shot in real life and can one visit the places in Venice? Venice is a stunning city to visit - even when it rains. It is a city like none other in Europe and without a doubt one of the most romantic cities in Europe - perhaps even more than Paris.

Visiting The Filming Locations In Venice

One can visit all the outdoor locations that Bond visited in Venice. For the 30 minutes of the movie that was set in Venice, one can retrace the steps and see firsthand what these places look like in reality.

Rialto Fish Market is one of the must-see attractions of Venice. One should aim to visit in the morning when it is alive and full of people buying and selling fish (as well as vegetables and fruit). By afternoon the market is packed up and finished with only the lingering smell of fish around.

  • Open: Daily From 9.00 am to Noon

St. Mark's Square is perhaps the main central attraction in Venice. It is the major square or plaza and is surrounded by some of the most iconic architecture in Venice. Everyone who visits Venice also visits St. Mark's Square.

The Hotel In Casino Royale

The movie was filmed in the Czech Republic, the Bahamas, Venice, and the United Kingdom (interior sets were in Barrandov and Pinewood Studios). If one would like to see the stunning hotel Bond stays at in Venice, then one will be a little disappointed.

There was a scene in the movie from Hotel Cipriani in Venice. The crew took over the restaurant of the hotel to film the scene. In fact, the cast and crew stayed at this hotel during the filming in Venice.

As for the Hotel Splendide seen in the movie while Bond was in Montenegro, that is also in the Czech Republic and is the Grandhotel Pupp in the town of Karlovy Vary.

Honorable Mention - The Rialto Bridge

One of the main attractions in Venice is the Rialto Bridge - it is a must-see attraction whether or not it appeared in Casino Royale. The Rialto Bridge is the oldest of the four bridges that span the Grand Canal in Venice in the heart of the island. It is only around 15 minutes walk from St. Mark's Square.

  • Crosses: The Grand Canal Of Venice

The Rialto Bridge has been rebuilt several times since it was first built in 1173 and is one of the main Instagramming locations in Venice. The current bridge was built out of stone between 1588 and 1591 by Antonio da Ponte

One should return to the bridge at different times to see how the colors and moods of the canals change with the sun.

  • Filming Location: For The Attack Of the Water Elemental in Spider-Man: Far From Home

It was also the filming location for the 2019 Marvel movie Spider-Man: Far From Home. A number of the famous landmarks of Venice appear in both movies. The Rialto Bridge features prominently in Spider-Man as the place where the Water Elemental attacks and Parker is flung against the bridge.
