Lake Tahoe is a beautiful freshwater lake that straddles the border between California and Nevada. However, due to its size, there are some differences between the north and south side. Based on preference, visitors might prefer one end of the lake over the other.

Lake Tahoe is about 22 miles across from north to south. This is expansive for a freshwater lake, but it's not so big that the climate is significantly different on either side. Therefore, it's safe to say that the temperatures, flora, and fauna are fairly consistent on both sides of the lake, however, human habitation has had an effect on the activities available.

The question as to which side of the lake is better has been addressed on Reddit several times, and here are the results.

North Lake Tahoe

Reddit users generally agree that North Lake Tahoe is a lot more tranquil and rustic than the southern end. There are a few reasons for this. One reason, a Reddit user says, is that getting to the north side is more difficult.

There are more hills and mountains in the north, which makes it an ideal choice for skiing and snowboarding. Additionally, there are a number of scenic hiking trails to enjoy.

Apart from skiing and hiking, however, Reddit users generally agree that there is not much else to do in the north. There are fewer commercial activities available because the area is mostly residential. As a result, the north side is lacking in the infrastructure that would normally accommodate tourists.  Roads might be less serviced, especially in the winter, which could be an obstacle to visitors.

Depending on personal preference, the lack of bustle and tourism is an opportunity for enhanced tranquility. On Christmas, for example. Reddit users generally agree that the north side is preferable, as it more closely embodies the intimate, quiet, and cozy Christmas that most people associate the holiday with.

Tahoe City, Truckee, and Squaw Village are all north of the lake. For a peaceful Christmas with undisturbed snow and quaint restaurants to eat hot food in, North Tahoe is a good bet.

In terms of lodging, too much commerce and tourism can get in the way of quality family time, and since Christmas is usually a family holiday, it might be better to live in a self-catering cabin rather than a hotel.

The Cabin Inn is located in northwest Lake Tahoe. These luxury cottages are nestled among the trees on the forested shoreside. Many of the cottages come with lake views, hot tubs, fireplaces, and kitchenettes, so they are suited for intimate solitude. The minimum period that guests can stay is two nights, which ensures that guests spend at least one entire day from morning to night in the log cabin and its surroundings.

  • Price for two nights: $504 (peak season)
  • Amenities: Private beach access, Wi-Fi, refrigerator, fireplace, hot tub, breakfast

According to u/TahoeMan1, North Tahoe Lake is the better option "hands down". However, despite that, the south side is still worth visiting, even if just for a day trip.

South Lake Tahoe

Across the board, Reddit agrees that South Lake Tahoe is a lot more touristy than the north, and possibly even congested. Visitors tend to go to the south to enjoy the casinos and nightlife. However, there are several other advantages as well. Some of the longer hiking trails can be found in the south, and several Reddit users report that the beaches are better. Additionally, there are more opportunities for water activities, which is advantageous for families with children. As a result, South Lake Tahoe is probably better suited for the summer, as water activities are closed in the winter.

u/VQ37_Stani explains that the southern shore is a lot more tourist-facing. For tourists looking for conventional, commercial fun, there are many casinos, bars, and clubs to while the night away in.

As a result of the tourist facing economy on the south shore, there are more visitors. This stimulates more commercial tourism, which can be a good thing for visitors who prefer bustle and noise. u/MrSmith1131 states that South Lake Tahoe statistically receives more tourism each year.

After a long night of gambling and drinking, tourists might need to cleanse their spirits with some nature hiking. This Reddit user elaborates on her first-hand knowledge of the areas surrounding Lake Tahoe. According to her, there are great hiking choices on both sides of the lake, but the longer and overnight hikes can be found on the south side.

u/mrstevegibbs has had some negative experiences in South Tahoe due to stricter regulation and recommends going north instead.

On the other hand, Reddit user u/cwlb is quite sure that South Lake Tahoe is superior in several ways, mostly due to the quality of beaches, the warmness of the water, and the family-facing activities. Some of these opinions are contrary to what other Redditors have stated, namely that the water temperature is the same on both sides of the lake and that the beaches are comparable. However, it is indisputable that South Lake Tahoe is more accessible and has more family-friendly activities.

In terms of lodging in the south, one resort has come up over and over.

Edgewood Tahoe Resort is a luxury hotel with a reputation for priciness and comfort. It is conventional as far as resorts go, which can be a good thing for tourists who want a reliable and universal experience.

  • Price per night: $500-750
  • Amenities: Wi-Fi, private pool, spa and massage parlor, room service, hotel activities,  balcony, coffee machine

Overall, to answer the question as to whether North or South Lake Tahoe is better, Reddit tends to lean toward the north. However, many positive things are unique to the Southshore. Ultimately, it depends on personal preference. For visitors who prefer solitude and clean fun, North Lake Tahoe is the place to go, while larger families and gamblers seeking a more conventional vacation experience might prefer South Lake Tahoe. In general, it's better to go to the north in the winter and the south in the summer.
