For quite some time, malls have been providing shopping and entertainment for people of all ages. Their sole purpose is to provide a collection of stores, all under one roof, but there are also some that feature food courts, amusement parks, movie theaters, and even more fun.

However, in today’s digital age, many choose to do their shopping online, and this has caused certain shops and entire malls to lose traffic and business. When things get really bad, a total shutdown may happen. The following 20 photos, down below, show malls that have seen better days, that are no longer functioning and that are sitting there abandoned. The damage, the empty corridors, the darkness… It is all rather creepy and a bit mysterious, as well!

20 A Really Scary Place

Anything that is abandoned, run-down and left in a sad state can be interesting but also scary, and that includes malls. We are used to these being busy and bustling places… not totally empty and only filled with broken mannequins like the one seen here.

19 A Row Of Empty Stores

On a similar note, there is this shot that shows empty stores. Some people have surely been at the mall right when it is about to open or when it is about to close; during that time, metal gates go down at the entrances. Now, these are always down and closed.

18 A Home For Fish

In Bangkok, nature has truly taken over at this old shopping center. In today's time, it is a home for fish. How did they get there? Is this a good place for them? And who even remembers when this was a place full of fun and fashion?

17 A Blend Of The Past & The Present

Photographer Seph Lawless has taken lots of pictures of abandoned malls and thinks that the Metro North Mall in Kansas City, Missouri is super creepy. Built in the '70s, it has a futuristic feel, yet it is damaged now, making it a strange blend of the past, present, and future.

16 A Winter Wonderland

Once again, the earth was let inside a mall, as this spot got filled up with snow. The glistening white powder is pretty (as it always is), but it is definitely weird to see it covering up an area that was once filled with shoppers.

15 A Place Where Sears Goes To Die

As mentioned, some stores have not had success in the past few years, like Sears, which has had to close several locations. Therefore, when it comes to abandoned malls, it is common to see an old Sears sign hanging around, all lonely and lifeless.

14 A Lonely Cart

Here is another mysterious picture: In the middle of a dark hallway, there is one shopping cart. It is sitting under one beam of light. How did it get there? Where are the others? And does it remember when it used to get utilized regularly?

13 A Lonely Bear

Paint has chipped away. Cleaning hasn't taken place for quite some time. Everything is hollow and a bit scary, honestly. And amidst it all, there is this toy bear that looks like it came straight out of a horror movie, due to its setting.

12 A Hole To The Unknown

Like most public buildings, malls have safety features like railings, walls and guard rails. But when an entire complex shuts down, these types of things are not necessarily thought about or important any longer, making this a giant hole into the creepy, creepy unknown.

11 An Entrance Into The Unknown

Similarly, the entrances into these places become broken, overgrown and obsolete. This particular one that is shown off here has trees and bushes and overgrowth that would make it very hard to actually open and enter those doors.

10 A Dark, Dark Place

Some of the scariest and most mysterious pics of abandoned malls show nothing… absolutely nothing. There is only darkness. There are no people. There is no movement. Everything is in decay. Anything could be lurking in the shadows, but instead, it just looks like, well, nothing.

9 An Empty Theater

As stated, many malls offer much more than shopping. That being said, these fun features look not so great when the mall shuts down, too. Just look at this movie theater. It used to be filled up regularly, in order to put films on display. Now, it is simply no longer.

8 A Sad Decoration

This shopping center must have closed down right after or during the holiday season because a Christmas tree was left up and on display. Was there no time to take it down at all? Did no one care that it was still there? How sad is this?!

7 A Not-So-Inviting Food Court

A very popular place in malls is the food court; every option under the sun can be found here, allowing everyone to eat whatever they want.

Of course, that is not the case at this specific court. Like many around the world, it has seen better days, and it now looks quite strange.

6 A Lot Of Damage

Most of the photographs that are included on this list leave us with lots of questions: How long has this been closed? How did all of that damage happen? What is next for this area? With all of the brokenness in this example, it certainly feels mysterious and scary.

Desolate places (in shows, movies, and real life) may have blackbirds swirling above them, as they can be associated with death and endings. That is exactly what is happening here, as these creatures must know that this mall is now done for and gone forever.

4 An Actual Abandoned Attraction

Remember that some malls have rides, and when they shut down, the theme park aspect does, as well. That is what is being shown off here, as this is an abandoned Indiana Jones-themed park inside a mall in China. Many would probably be afraid of this coaster if it were running… and definitely as it is here, all abandoned!

3 A Surprising Place For Life

While all of these empty areas are full of dirt, decay, broken items and left-behind possessions, there is also, at times, life. Yes, while this image is full of emptiness, there is green, there are plants, and there is life… somehow and some way.

2 A Home

This is an interesting picture: This abandoned Lebanese mall has actually become a home for Syrian refugees. Once again, we have many questions about that, as this is indeed a mysterious and intriguing thing that has come about over time.

And, of course, people have claimed to see ghosts in abandoned malls. Yes, tons of people have said to have seen tons of ghosts in tons of places, but when there is a creepy and empty area, the chances of a sighting seem to increase!
