No matter what kind of summer vacay we're looking for, we all have one thing in common: we enjoy leaving our strict routines behind and having some fun in the sun. Or on a city street. Or skiing down some snow-covered mountains, depending on what we love.

Americans don't go on tons of vacations anymore but when they do make time for a trip, there are a few destinations that they choose above others. Read on to find out the most popular places for Americans to travel to.

Americans Go To Mexico For Many Vacations

It's easy to find safe spots in Mexico to travel to... and that's good news. Because Mexico is the most popular place for Americans to go.

According to Planetware, people love going to Playa del Carmen and Cancun. These are located on the Gulf of Mexico and have a lot of all-inclusive resorts, so that makes sense. You can add a ton of different activities to your list, from seeing ancient Mayan ruins to scuba diving to snorkeling. And, of course, Mexico is also a great place to chill on the beach or by the pool. It's also a great idea to stay in Mexico City: a Reddit user whose wife goes to Mexico in the summertime posted some advice about this. They wrote, "Mexico City is really a great city. I recommend the La Roma area to stay in - lots of outdoor cafes, walkable streets, and shops in the area."

Canada Gets Some Love, Too

According to The Telegraph, Americans are also happy to go to Canada for a vacation, and it's the number two place that they go. Many Reddit users talk about how much they enjoy going to Quebec. Americans like Montreal and Quebec City when booking vacation time. Someone in the thread also mentioned going to Halifax: they said that Cape Breton Island's Cabot Trail and Peggy's Cove are two beautiful destinations. Toronto was also brought up as a good place thanks to its multiculturalism, Eaton Centre, and different sports teams.

According to Trip Savvy, when people from the U.S. take a trip to Canada, there are some things that they should keep in mind. One thing: they can't have fresh fruit in their purse when going across the border. Another tip that is good to know (and also important): a passport is necessary.

The Telegraph says that Americans love going to London and England took third place on the list of places where people from the U.S. travel the most. How many people from the U.S. go to England on an annual basis? That would be 2.5 million, which is definitely a high number. That's a lot of afternoon tea, fish and chips, and cute photos taken in front of red telephone booths.

As it turns out, Americans have been booking trips to London for a really long time now, so this has been a favorite spot for a while now. According to the LA Times, 4 million North Americans went to England in 2014, and an AAA report said that the majority of Americans would go there in the summer of 2015.

It's interesting to learn that Americans love traveling to these three places: Mexico, Canada, and England. These destinations definitely give us some great inspiration about what our next vacation is going to be.
