Ice cream is a universal love language for many who find comfort in their favorite foods. Whether it's after school memories of treats at the scoop shop or late-night movies with ice cream to follow, it's a well-loved dessert. It's been there through breakups, during hard days, during celebratory moments, and now, America has spoken... and it's clear that some flavors have been there for us way more than others.

The top contender was quite a surprise as it's a flavor that seems to get the least love, but there are some other surprises here that will probably stump many a puzzled face. With an unbelievable range of flavors to choose from, these are the top of the top, the best of the best, and the pints that everyone keeps turning to, making them true classics.

Strawberry

It's not the most loved flavor but it is one of the most loved flavors, which might come as a surprise to some. Strawberry ice cream isn't normally seen by itself out of Neapolitan sundaes, but this flavor managed to squeak by with a reputation of its own for greatness. It's one of the only berries that lends both sweetness and just the right amount of tang to ice cream, so it's pretty easy to see why it's still so well-loved today.

Buttered Pecan

Loved by many and also hated by many, right? Buttered Pecan might not be the first flavor that many people choose for their ice cream sundaes, but according to Frozen Dessert Supplies, it's still top trending in terms of favorited US ice cream flavors. It's overwhelmingly sweet which actually works in a frozen dessert, and its slightly nutty pecan flavor really hits the entire scoop home in terms of what 'classic' tastes like.

For some reason, this ice cream exists only as a vehicle to carry uncooked cookie dough, and we definitely don't hate it... and neither does the rest of the US. It's one of the most popular flavors ever created which makes sense because there's no better combination than cookies and milk. So why should cookies and ice cream be any different? For those lucky enough to have visited the Ben & Jerry's factory, they could have tried any number of cookie-themed flavors, from Oatmeal Raisin to Cookies and Milk, and, of course, Half-Baked.

Mint Chocolate Chip

Of course, cookie dough couldn't beat out the one and only Mint Chocolate Chip. This flavor will always be on everyone's radar which is interesting due to the fact that mint is such a strong taste. However, that hasn't stopped anyone from enjoying a scoop (or three) of this nightly. There's something about chilly peppermint mixed with chocolate chunks that makes this ice cream so dang tasty, and leaving fans wanting more each time they've hit the bottom of their bowl.

Cookies & Cream

Chocolate and cream just go together (as demonstrated by Oreos) and in ice cream form, this combination only gets better. Crispy cookies are mixed with chunks of sweet cream to create a decadent ice cream that binds two of everyone's favorite things. It's the perfect balance between chocolate and vanilla and brings together just the right amount of chocolate to make for a delicious dessert.

Chocolate

Surprisingly, chocolate did not make it to number one on the list. While this flavor is a solid number two, it's not the most popular flavor in the US and its lack of versatility is probably one reason why. While chocolate is positively scrumptious on its own, it doesn't necessarily compete well with every topping or when scooped on top of a pie or cake. In an ice cream cake, it's delightful - however, when scooped on top of a pumpkin pie, it ends up competing with flavors and muddling up a perfectly good dessert. Therefore, there can be only one flavor that's truly number one in the country...

Vanilla

That's right, the vanilla fans have it! Considering how many things vanilla ice cream can be added to, including smoothies and milkshakes, it's almost not surprising that it's so overwhelmingly popular. Sure, it doesn't have cookie pieces or chocolate chunks. It doesn't offer anything but one flavor note nor does it stand out amongst a heaping of toppings. However, it does serve as a brilliant base and for those who have had pure vanilla ice cream - with vanilla bean bits throughout it - its flavor is creamy, sweet, and exotic. Plus, it's the only thing that really goes well with pie.
