In actuality, Hell isn't a town - it's a hamlet belonging to the larger town of Pinckney, Michigan. Regardless of its small size, it hasn't stopped the residents from fully embracing the hellish nature of their hamlet's namesake. Many visitors would be thrown off by such celebration surrounding the tributes to the underworld that exists throughout this community but those who love all things horror and Halloween revel in its blatant boldness. Even the mayor himself is an admitted Halloween lover, offering up the town for some of the greatest spooks in the state.

During the month of October, however, Hell seems to come alive, being transformed from a casual underworld-on-earth to one that's been ramped up to include all things scream-worthy. Similar to how the residents of Salem or St. Helens (where Halloweentown was filmed) celebrate the spooky culture year-round, Hell also contributes to its own fun... and we're certainly feeling the heat.

The Mayor's Halloween Offer For 2020

The self-proclaimed mayor of Hell has an intriguing offer for the residents of Michigan and fellow Halloween fans. After putting his gothic-style lair up for rent on Airbnb, John Colone made a statement, saying, "I am the biggest Halloween fan in the world (and the underworld), so I hope that our little slice of paradise can fill fellow Halloween lovers with all of the frightful chills and spooky sensations of the season. And to our guests and soon-to-be Mayors, I trust you’ll find that there is no place more welcoming than Hell on Earth—we can’t wait to show you a helluva good time!"

The rental will only be available for the days of October 18th, 21st, and 24th, each being a one-night stay, and reservations officially open on October 14th. Decorated in a manner in which one would expect upon walking into a place named Hell, the Airbnb comes completely with gothic-style decor and an outdoor movie projector to watch all of the best horror classics.

Around The Town

Hell was first given its name during the 1830s and since then it has built up quite a reputation for small-town (hellish) charm. It wasn't until the early 2000s when it was turned into a multi-faceted tourist destination, though, complete with the local business sporting the same theme as the town's name.

Underworld-themed jokes aside, this area of Michigan is truly eye-catching during the fall and a favorite scenic spot is Hell Dam (in which, a sign reads: 'PLEASE do not litter or pee in the river. It’s going through HELL now,' according to Awesome Mitten. Not far from that is the town's miniature golf course which, of course, features illustrations at each hole featuring devilishly ghoulish themes. Near that is Scream's Ice Cream and Souvenirs, where visitors can partake in one-stop-shopping in search of all things Hell-themed (including postcards that say 'greetings from Hell').

This gift shop also has fun Halloween-themed items including costumes, and it's not surprising to know that it's open all year-round, October or not. A fun aspect to this is actually mailing out the postcard - the post office on-site makes it a habit of slightly singeing each one that gets mailed, nailing the authenticity that is getting a postcard from hades. For those wondering, yes... Couples can even get married in Hell thanks to their on-site wedding chapel.

Food Suited For The Devil In All Of Us

The options for food are the Hell Hole Bar and Hell Saloon. Neither one sounds more welcoming than the other but fear not - the names are not indicative of the atmosphere or the grub. Both menus do feature some themed items such as the Hell Wings and Good Meet Evil Philly, and according to those who have visited, the service is super friendly and the vibes are welcoming and warm.

For a sweet treat, again, Scream's Ice Cream is the place to be, and their pumpkin ice cream is an absolute must according to Awesome Mitten. The option for 'bat droppings' is tradition and all this ice cream needs to really achieve the level of Halloween that most strive for during October.

There's no such thing as being too touristy in a place like this - after all, how often does a person get the chance to visit Hell while also having the option to leave it? We're pretty sure this wasn't what Dante was thinking when he was writing about the seven circles, but it's close enough for most of us.
