While most of us probably wish we were enjoying the sunny Tampa sun right about now, the fact is that most of us are planning the Super Bowl at home this year. While that might not be much different from any other year, it could look like a smaller gathering or one that needs a bit of uplifting to stand out from the rest, and, luckily, we've got the answer for that: themed Super Bowl food.

If you're not rooting for the Kansas City Chiefs, then chances are, you're probably rooting for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Along with having a great football team, Tampa Bay is also home to some classic and bold dishes that exude Tampa Bay - and Florida - cuisine. And there's more good news - those dishes are pretty easy to whip up at home. This year, try swapping out the traditional Super Bowl snacks for something a little more dynamic, fun, and exciting. It might not be a party but it can certainly feel like one when there are enough Cubans and Tampa-themed snacks to go around. Buckle up and get ready to indulge in all the Sunshine State has to offer with dishes you'll actually want to recreate for the big game day.

Classic Cuban Sandwich

When asked what a classic dish is in Tampa Bay, an overwhelming number of people will say that you can't leave the city without having a Cuban sandwich, also known as a Cubano. This sandwich is also popular in Miami and is said to have originated in the state, consisting of two different types of pork, house-made pickles, cheese, and good mustard. Everyone seems to have their favorite part of this sandwich, starting with the bread: good, crusty bread that can hold up to a hot press is absolutely necessary.

Next, roasted pork is added, which is best cooked low and slow with a classic Cuban-style marinade until it simply just falls apart. Added to that is good ham and to that, good salami. Swiss cheese, mustard, and pickles are all added to finish and when each ingredient is pressed and melted together, it's like a chorus of yum singing in harmony. It's hailed as the greatest sandwich in Florida and can be made just as easily at home; swap the normal foot-long sub out for this sandwich instead!

Southern-Style BBQ

Every region of the US has its own barbecue style and Southern-style often includes vinegar-based sauces, BBQ chicken, slow-smoked brisket, and pulled pork. Any one of these would be a great nod to the South but the most popular is probably pulled pork (which can also double as a topping for a Cuban sandwich!).

Pork tenderloin is all you need to make pulled pork (although it can also be done with pork shoulder for some extra tender fatty pieces), along with a slow cooker and your favorite BBQ spice or sauce.

Deviled Crab

Another dish that's iconic to Tampa Bay is deviled crab. Florida has access to fresh seafood and while fish and other shellfish are popular options in restaurants that are on the water, there's something about deviled crab that makes it so specific to Tampa Bay.

This salad mix is made fresh and then usually fried to make a deviled crab croquette, which is delicious when served with aioli or mayo-based sauce. This is the perfect two-bite Superbowl snack and it's also super easy to make with some imitation crab or, for the real deal, some canned crab.

Empanadas

Along with the Cuban sandwich, empanadas are another dish commonly found throughout Florida. These aren't just delicious but they're also super fun to make, as the filling can consist of practically anything. Most commonly, a mix of ground beef, onions, and green bell peppers are used, but empanadas have been filled with anything from sweet fillings like apples to even more savory fillings, such as spinach and feta.

Shredded chicken is another great savory filling, and for a vegetarian option, cheese and potatoes are always delicious. These can also be made in bulk and fry up super fast, so they're easy to make at home.

Italian Dishes

Surprisingly, there are many Italian restaurants in Florida and in Tampa Bay. While Italian food might not seem like something one would serve at the Superbowl, you can definitely take inspiration from Italian cuisine to make things such as meatballs and rice balls, also known as arancini.

Lasagna rollups, stuffed shells, and even fried ravioli are all great nods to the cuisine while also being Superbowl snack-friendly.
