Anyone who has seen Gossip Girl (or any New York City-based TV show or movie) will know that no one does brunch better than a New Yorker. Of course, it was the BEC - bacon, egg, and cheese - that originated here and still is the breakfast of choice for 75% of the population but on weekends and during special occasions, there's only one food option that can satisfy the needs of everyone: Brunch.

New Year's Day is the biggest holiday for brunch, which makes complete sense. Normally, on any other given year, the night prior would have involved a party, get-together, or bar hop with our closest family and friends, following by an after-party celebration post-ball drop. When the sun shines its first rays on the following morning, breakfast is completely out of the question... because barring having to work, most of us are sleeping until 10 AM, at least. Therefore, the New Year's Day brunch was born and it will forever be immortalized in New York City culture.

With this year looking a bit different, the good news is that you can host the same type of brunch at home pretty easily. The attitude of a New Yorker isn't needed, but this brunch menu will have all the attitude you need, anyway.

The Hydration

With all of this food, you need something to wash it down with, right? Thus, the ever-famous brunch drinks. Of course, a mimosa is a classic. Anything with a little bubbly, really, is very New York in style and theme. Following a night of celebrating, there's nothing more welcome at the table than a drink that's light, fizzy, and won't have us feeling as though we only got three hours of sleep.

Alternatively, if there's a more desperate need for coffee, try something like Irish cream. Mocktails are the perfect option, too - any kind of seltzer-based fruit punch (think a sangria, but substitute wine for sparkling water), mocha coffees, or cappuccinos to keep energy levels up.

The Bagels And Smear

An assortment of bagels is absolutely necessary at any brunch. The three main bagels that should be on the table are plain, everything, and onion. Adding an assortment of smear and toppings gives the entire table that brunch-buffet feel, which is exactly what you'll find in New York City - the faster a person can work their way down the table, with the most options possible, is what we want.

A toaster or toaster oven is a great thing to put out for anyone who wants a toasted bagel and to top the bagels, plain cream cheese, and scallion cream cheese are always safe bets. A nice spread of lox (smoked salmon), capers, and sliced tomato are enough, and, of course, salt and pepper.

The Sweet Options

In all likelihood, no one in New York City is taking the time to bake a variety of pastries for their New Year's Day brunch unless they thoroughly enjoy baking. Most New York City kitchens are very small, making the actual baking process a bit complicated. Therefore, bakeries are a New Yorker's best friend most of the time.

An assortment of Italian cookies, a box of French pastries, and even just some croissants, muffins, and cinnamon buns is enough to fancy up a table and give people some extra options to satisfy that sweet tooth. Plus, it's nice to have the relief of not baking or cooking in the morning.

The Side Snacks

No brunch is ever complete without some snacks on the side. These can consist of the actual 'homemade' dishes and really, they're only semi-homemade. A small cheese or charcuterie plate is a nice addition for anyone who's short on time and doesn't have any desire to spend a minute longer in the kitchen. To keep on the more breakfast side of brunch, a pan of scrambled eggs is another good addition - scramble the eggs in the pan with a pat of butter, salt, pepper, and a pinch of chives to create delicious, creamy eggs. Small extras, such as toast, butter, and jams are another welcome addition to the table, while homemade muffins or a quick bread add a cute and festive touch. Don't forget foods such as crispy bacon, sausage, and ham, as many like to put these on their bagels or eat them with their eggs. Granola, fruit, and yogurt are great healthy options to have on the table as well and if you're feeling crazy, whip up some mini Bisquick pancakes or waffles!
