Looking for something outdoors to do while in Atlanta, Georgia? Consider visiting Stone Mountain Park. It is a quartz monzonite dome monadnock and is the most popular place in the state of Georgia. Stone Mountain Park is designed to be a great place to bring the whole family - it is full of family-friendly attractions.

Stone Mountain Park is only 16 miles east of Atlanta, and so it is easy to reach on an excursion. Another great excursion from Atlanta is the small town of Senoia - it is famous for its old Southern charming historic buildings and for being a filming location for The Walking Dead. Just expect Senoia to be infinitely sleeper.


While the park is owned by the state of Georgia, it is managed by Herschend Family Entertainment - the entertainment company with many of the attractions in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee and Branson, Missouri like Silver Dollar City and Dollywood. If one does visit Pigeon Forge or Branson, be sure to book a dinner at Dolly's Stampede - it will be a dinner like none other.

Visitors can reach the summit of the mountain by a walk-up trail on the mountain's west side. Alternatively, take the easy route and ride the Skyride aerial tram.

Planning A Visit To Stone Mountain Park

There are a number of admission tickets and passes to choose from; there are some main ones (prices do not include tax).

General Attractions Pass:

Visitors also really need to stay for the evening and watch the impressive Lasershow. The show is free for Mountain Members (with a reservation).

It is better to purchase the Lasershow Spectacular tickets online as walk-up tickets are only sold on availability. They can also be an add-on to an Attractions Pass.

The Largest Bas-Relief Artwork In The World

Visitors should understand that Stone Mountain has been made as a monument to the Confederacy.

Stone Mountain Park is famous for its massive rock relief on its north face - it is the largest bas-relief artwork in the world. It has been cut 42 feet deep in the mountain, measuring 90 feet high and 190 wide. It sits 400 feet above the ground.

The rock relief depicts the Confederate leaders Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, and Stonewall Jackson. Such a Confederate monument may stir mixed emotions for many visitors. It was completed in 1972. The Confederates are depicted on their favorite horses - Blackjack, Traveller, and Little Sorrel.
