Along the coast of Northern Ireland, travelers can find the Causeway Coastal Route, a spectacular 200-mile stretch with some of the most scenic views in the country. The route begins in Belfast and winds through the nine Glens of Antrim, which can only be described as something from a fairy tale. Parts of this causeway can even be hiked, allowing nature-lovers to spend several days exploring and absorbing its natural beauty on foot.

For road-trip lovers who enjoy scenic views, the entire span can be driven in less than one day. There are many stop-off points along this road as well, so never fear - picture opportunities are a-plenty!

The Entire Route Is 200 Miles Long And Can Be Driven In One Day

In just a few hours, eager travelers can see the expanse of the Causeway Coastal Route. The entire drive will take around two and a half hours, but obviously longer for those who plan on getting out and exploring. The trip can be broken up further with various stops to trek the walking paths and chances to witness views from the cliff overlooks.

Start The Drive In Belfast Or Derry

The drive can either start or end in Belfast, depending on whether you're closest to there or Derry. Regardless of the starting point, nothing on this route should be missed - and there are plenty of signs to direct travelers on where to stop off along the way. Along the way, you'll see charming seaside towns and villages before coming up to intriguing natural land features and steep seaside cliffs.

Along The Way, You'll See Gobbins Cliff Path, Glens Of Antrim, Giant's Causeway, And Mussenden Temple

For those seeking to head out on foot, Gobbins Cliff Path is the sign to search for. This three-hour hike is relatively easy and led by a knowledgable guide, costing only eight euros. While the path is mostly manageable, there is a bit of a steep climb back to the parking area, and the trail does include rope bridges and cliffside maneuvering. While there is no self-tour for this hike (tours must be scheduled in advance), there is an overlook for those who opt not to take it.

For Those Wanting To Break Up The Drive, Here's Where You Can Spend The Night

For a 17th-century experience, Ballygally Castle Hotel is a must-stay for those intending to spend several days exploring the Causeway. This castle's origins date back to 1625 and adds charm and historic accuracy to any overnight Ireland stay and even has its own ghost story. The Saltwater House and Blackwater House are more modern options, especially for those looking to take in the beautiful ocean views the coast has to offer. For those who desire something even more unique, Barbican at Glenarm is only a short drive over the Glenarm River and features classic Gothic architecture and even a stone turret staircase.

You Can Hike The Entire Thing (33 Miles) In Roughly Four Days

Avid hikers will be happy to hear that it's possible to hike the Causeway part of this coast in only a few days. This is arguably the best way to take in all the coast has to offer, including Giant's Causeway and its uniquely-shaped coastline.

Foodie Tip: Save Your Appetite For Belfast And Its Many Delights

After such a long drive (or hike), it's understandable that food is the first thing most people will be searching for. Belfast has a food scene that's very up and coming and there are plenty of choices in this diverse city. For a Michelin star-rated option, check out any one of Michael Deane's restaurants: EIPIC, Meat Locker, or Love Fish. EDŌ restaurant was opened after chef Johnny Ellicott spent time working with the famous Gordon Ramsay, and OX is another Michelin-star, and well-loved, food choice. For a more casual atmosphere, Long's Fish and Chips, The Muddler's Club, and Muriel's Cafe Bar can all be found in North Belfast. For South Belfast, try The Barking Dog, Molly's Yard, or Shu, which has been called Ireland's best twice now.
