As someone who's worked in hospitality for years, there are a whole lot of things staff wishes they could say but don't.

After all, when it comes to entitled guests and visitors who expect workers to give them the moon, it's best that the staff stay quiet. If they open their mouths, things could get bad. As in, not having a job anymore kind of bad.

Whether it's guests who flout their privilege or those who only think they're something special, people working the front desk, room service, and housekeeping get plenty of flak from customers. And the thing is, it's not usually warranted, especially because hospitality workers are especially skilled at keeping their mouths shut.

But for those who are curious about how hospitality workers at hotels really feel, here are 20 things the staff is too polite to say out loud (but wish they could scream from the rooftops).

20 There's No Point In Calling The Manager...

Though the front desk staff might not be the top-most authority in the building, they're probably acting on the whims of those higher-ups. So, if you want something and the hotel receptionist won't give it to you, there's probably a reason. Of course, they'll likely call the manager for you eventually...

19 Because They Won't Give You What You Want

If the first person you ask says no, it's pretty likely the next person up the ladder will back them up. After all, policies are in place for a reason, and it's not like receptionists are taught to tell clients no when there's anything they could do to change the outcome.

18 Suck It Up And Deal With The Room You Have

To the people who pitch tantrums when they don't get what they want, we hear you. But for most hotel front desk staff, there's not too much they can do. Whether a higher-up says not to change the arrival schedule or a big-wig has the best room, sometimes we just wish you'd suck it up and go to your room.

17 There Are Other Open Rooms, But You Won't Hear That From Me

Scheduling arrivals, departures, and stayovers aren't necessarily easy for hotel staff. It's like a Tetris game wherein things are constantly changing. Which means that there *might* be another room type available, but hotel staff can't always tell you that, because there's no way they can make it work out.

16 I *Could* Upgrade You, But I Won't

Sometimes, there are upgrade options either for free or a nominal fee. But if you're rude to the receptionist, they probably won't upgrade you. It's often easier (and more rewarding) to lie to a guest rather than do something super nice when they're being rotten.

15 The Discount You're Getting Isn't Really A Discount

Getting a good discount on anything can make you feel like a million bucks. But in reality, discounts on hotel stays aren't really discounts. Odds are, you're getting the same 10 percent or so cut that everyone else gets, just for asking. Unless you're already dropping loads of cash, of course.

14 We Don't Really Care About Your Travel Problems

People arriving to check-in often want to give their receptionist their life story. And while it's great to make conversation, there's only so much sympathy to be had and so many "oh wows" your check-in agent can produce. Sorry, but that's life.

13 You're Not The Only Regular Who Thinks They Matter

Every regular visitor to a hotel thinks they're special. And sure, we might really enjoy their visits in some cases, but that doesn't mean they'll get special treatment. Because it's impossible to give every single guest exactly what they want, no matter how much we like you.

12 Yes, The Pool Is Always The Same Temperature, And No I Didn't Turn It Down

Any hotel with a pool or spa likely takes care to maintain the chemical and temperature balance of the water. But for some reason, guests always assume the temperature is cranked up or down. Newsflash: hotel staff usually has no control over that. Maybe ask the pool guy?

11 I've Put A Note In Your File That You're Obnoxious

Ah, the magic of hotel booking systems with fields for confidential notes. You can make all manner of alerts, comments, and flags on hotel reservations and on individual guests' profiles. Basically, if you're a jerk, everyone else who works there will know it.

10 We're Not Actually Overbooked, But I'm Not Putting My Neck On The Line For You

Every hotel sets aside extra rooms, just in case. If they tell you they don't, they're straight-up lying, and for good reason! Mistakes happen, and there has to be a buffer so that guests aren't pitching tents in the lobby (and screaming in the staff's faces).

9 You May Be On A "Wait List" But Other Guests Have Priority

Some hotels keep a waitlist for super busy weekends and holidays. But even if there's a waitlist, that doesn't mean the staff goes in order when calling folks to offer them a room. Usually, it will be the elite guests who receive freed-up rooms... But not always!

8 Front Desk Staff Only Have So Much Power...

If only each hospitality worker had a nickel for every time they had to tell a guest, "I'm sorry, but there's nothing more I can do," we'd all be rich. There are certain things that are just beyond our power, like moving someone from the room you asked for just because.

7 But Probably More Than You Think

At the same time, hotel staff does have a certain amount of power. You never know, the person who's checking you in could be the same person who assigns rooms and has wiggle room to swap things. Best to be nice, just in case.

6 You'd Turn Around And Leave If You Knew How "Clean" Your Room Really Is

Yes, the sheets are cleaned (more like sanitized) after every guest, and housekeeping does as thorough a job as possible. But not every surface gets a once-over, and it's not like they're in there shampooing the carpet after every guest. There's still a ton of grime all over your room. Enjoy!

5 You're Not That Special...

If you put a note on your reservation that you'd like a certain room or amenity and it works out, great. But chances are that it only happened that way because it was convenient for the hotel staff. If your request is way out there, they probably won't jump through hoops to make it happen.

4 We Only Give You What You Want So You Won't Complain

A lot of hotel guests assume that the staff says "how high?" when they tell them to jump because they're big spenders or something. But no, it's more likely that customers are getting what they want only so that the front desk workers don't have to argue with them at check-in.

3 We *Could* Bend The Rules, But It's Not Worth It

Even if you're waving $20 in the hotel receptionist's face, that probably won't be enough for them to toe the line for you. The fact of the matter is that the employees at the hotel are to make their bosses happy, first and foremost, and some rules can't be broken, even for cash.

2 You're Not Spending Enough To Get Special Treatment

Some people assume that because they always book a suite or stay at the same hotel so many times per year, they're automatically on some special list. But the truth is that many rewards programs don't really benefit you unless you spend thousands of dollars per visit.

1 We Know The Room Isn't Worth The Price, But Pay Up Anyway

Obviously, the hotel staff doesn't set the rates at the establishment. Honestly, we know the accommodations probably aren't worth hundreds of dollars per night. But hey, we just work here, it's not like we get to establish the rates per room.
