There are so many awesome hotels in the Nordic country of Sweden. There's the JumboStay at the airport in Stockholm for those who have fallen in love with the airplane flying over and forget to actually stay in the stunning buildings in Stockholm. There are the iconic ice hotels in northern Sweden, and there's the Treehotel in Sweden's northern Lapland.

Staying here is like sleeping in another world. The brainchildren behind this unusual hotel were Britta and Kent Lindvall who started the hotel in 2010 and built seven huts in the trees above. They were inspired by the film The Tree Lover. The rooms are suspended 4-6 meters above the ground and boast stunning views of the Lule River valley. Come at the right time and if you're lucky you may even get to see the northern lights.

The Seven Huts

  • Season For The Northern Lights: From September to March

Each hut is unique and various Scandinavian architects have left their incredible mark on the design. The hosts at Treehotel welcome all guests like family. They seek to take their guests away from the many stresses and demands of everyday life and create an unusual environment to relax in.

They combine ecological values, comfort, nature, and modern design for an exciting adventure in Sweden's sparse, hostile, and yet encaptivating Lapland.

The seven huts are the Bird's Nest, the UFO, the Mirrorcube, the Cabin, the 7th Room, the Dragonfly, and the Blue Cone. In addition, they also have a more conventional guesthouse. It's not possible to go into detail about all of these stunning works of art, but they are all shown on their website.

Bird's Nest Room

The Bird's Nest Room was created to blend in with the surrounding environment and in there one can feel oneself at one with nature. Imagine sleeping in a gigantic treetop bird's nest that no one can peep into!

To get the Bird's Nest one has to climb a ladder and enter through a hatch in the floor. The room is a little compact and has small windows but it is certainly bright enough. There are sliding doors that can be closed to provide separate bedrooms. There is also a toilet as well as cushioned seating by the windows.

It is popular with families with children and it can also be used by 4 adults.

  • Capacity: 4 People
  • Curved Beds: Two of The Beds Are Curved To Follow The Walls
  • Tip: Leave Large Suitcases In The Luggage Room - It's Difficult to Lug It Up And Down!
  • Size: 17 sq. m
  • Price For Two: 4,700 SEK ($550) (Depending On The Season)

The UFO

In making the UFO, they wanted to design the most unexpected thing in the forest - like everyone knows that UFOs only crash land in Roswell, New Mexico. What are they doing in the forests of northern Sweden?

This hovering UFO amongst the trees is made of high-strength composite material making the structure as light but durable as possible. The interior is as other-worldly as the outside. It is a space-inspired world with a starry sky on the ceiling. As you relax in the UFO you can feel it move as it is suspended on wires and beams from the trees.

The UFO has a capacity for five people,  one double bed, and three sings. It is the most popular of the family rooms. It is not well suited for 5 adults if all are tall, the single beds are a little short.

To enter the UFO one climbs the electric, collapsible ladder up through the hatch in the floor (leave the large baggage behind).

  • Capacity: 2 Adults and 3 Little People (Little Green Men Work As Well)
  • Price For Two: 4,700 SEK ($550) (Depending On The Season)

The Mirrorcube

Once again this is construction art at its most imaginative. The cube measures 4x4x4 meters and is surrounded by mirror walls that both reflect and make it blend in with its surroundings (like the cloaking in Star Trek).

A tree trunk goes through the room and is enclosed by an aluminum frame - that forms the base of the room.

  • Mirror Glass: All Exterior Walls Are Covered with Mirror Glass

From outside it appears as though the room is glass - just glass. But on the interior, the walls are made of light plywood with windows in three of them and in the ceiling. Perhaps one of the coolest things about this bizarre room is that there is a balcony behind a mirror facade - one can go outside the box and not be seen.

  • Capacity: Two Guests
  • Bed: Double Bed
