Generally speaking, when we climb onto a roller coaster we have a pretty good idea of what to expect. Some quick drops, wind in your hair, and maybe a thrilling loop or two. All of these are great, but sometimes it can be fun to change things up a little and experience something new and exciting.

Well, Walt Disney World has officially come through and answered our prayers with a brand new attraction: the Guardians of the Galaxy Cosmic Rewind coaster, which opens at Epcot this month as part of the continuing 50th-anniversary celebrations happening all throughout the Walt Disney World Resort. We were fortunate enough to be given premier access to this thrilling new ride, and we’re here to tell you that this is one roller coaster that you won’t want to miss!

Background Of The Cosmic Rewind Coaster

In development since 2017, the Guardians of the Galaxy Cosmic Rewind is a totally immersive concept that combines several new technologies, much like the other ones that Disney theme parks are already famous for. This new coaster takes things to another level, being the first-ever roller coaster built at Epcot, and the first coaster that features a backward launch in all of Walt Disney World’s parks.

Taking place between Guardians of the Galaxy Volumes 1 & 2, Cosmic Rewind turns the rider into a character in the story. Throughout some great exposition featuring Glenn Close (reprising her role of Nova Prime from the Guardians of the Galaxy films) and Terry Crews as a new character Tal Marik, we are teleported from “Terra”, or Earth, to the planet of Xandar to observe it. However, your plans are quickly changed when the Celestial Eson the Searcher appears and steals the cosmic generator.

Guests board the coaster to fly home, with everyone’s favorite Guardians of the Galaxy character Rocket, charting a path back to Earth-but things won’t be so easy. In keeping with the fun and upbeat Guardians of the Galaxy films, the Cosmic Rewind coaster features six different classic songs, including Disco Inferno by the Trampps, and One Way or Another by Blondie. According to Disney’s fantastic Imagineers who designed the ride, they rode the coaster over and over again, narrowing down the list from 100 songs and eventually settling on six, one of which cues up randomly at the beginning of each ride.

“We wanted to match the feel and the movement of the ride system, but also the spirit and the energy that the Guardians and our story really bring” - Ashley Levine, Disney Imagineer

At first glance, one might question why the new Marvel ride has found its place at Epcot. However, with the Epcot park currently undergoing a reimagining and in keeping with Walt Disney’s original idea of visions of the future, the futuristic technology, and interplanetary themes make this the perfect location for some interstellar antics.

Riding The Cosmic Rewind Coaster

The experience of riding the Cosmic Rewind coaster is difficult to put into words. Riders continue to follow the story of the ride after boarding, with characters like Rocket, Peter Quill & Drax talking you through what should be smooth sailing. Only, would we really have expected a straightforward ride? With the celestial Eson the Searcher trying to foil the Guardians' attempt to get riders safely back to Earth, get ready for a wild, winding, and surprisingly smooth ride.

Some people have reported a bit of motion sickness after going on the ride.

Without spoiling too much, the Cosmic Rewind coaster includes a reverse launch, detachable cars, and an immersive film portion of the ride that follows you throughout the course of your journey. This coaster is a completely unique design, and it’s fascinating to ride a roller coaster that has so many different elements to it.
