This week marks an extra reason to TGIF - it’s National Donut Day!
Taking place on the first Friday of June every year, National Donut Day is celebrated far and wide, with stores like Dunkin Donuts, Krispy Kreme, Tim Hortons and more getting in on the sprinkled festivities.
Even Walmart and Papa John’s have decided to participate in the tasty day.
National Donut Day gets its origins from The Salvation Army and World War 1. According to history, a military doctor serving in the war purchased several dozen donuts as a treat for the soldiers on his military base. Later, The Salvation Army followed suit, providing donuts and coffee to service members.
The first official National Donut Day was in 1938, when The Salvation Army held a fundraiser to honour the members who had initially handed out the round, sweet treat in World War 1.
