There are a lot of items on the McDonald's menu that we love to order. From their fries and their nuggets to their burgers and chicken sandwiches, some even prefer their fish sandwiches over it all.

When it comes to McDonald’s releasing new items, they are always taking a chance. People are very picky nowadays and some hate change. Take the McDonald's Beyond Meat Burger they started selling a few months ago, people were very skeptical about it. In the end though, after a lot of criticism, it was a big hit.

Not everything they do though has been a big hit. There have been some menu items throughout the years that ended up being a big flop. Here are 10 of those flops….

12 Mickey D's Pizza: They Thought Pizza Would Be A Good Dinner Option, But Soon Realized It Took Too Long To Cook

Over the years, there have been a few weird Mcdonald's menu items that have flopped. One of those doomed items was their pizza. When people come to McDonald’s they expect to get a meal that is made hot and fresh within a few minutes. Unfortunately, pizza takes time to create and thus defeated the whole "fast food" label. In fact, one customer was recorded saying, “I ordered it at the drive-thru window and then had to park and wait 10 minutes.”

11 The Hula Burger: They Wanted Another Option For Catholics During Lent, But They Preferred The Fish

One of the biggest McDonald’s failed items of all time was their Hulu Burger. Back in the early 1960s, the founder of McDonald's decided to create the Hulu Burger for Catholics during Lent, which was just a piece of pineapple wedged between two pieces of cheese on a toasted bun. Luckily for the Catholics, the Cincinnati franchise owner had just created the Filet-O-Fish, and after a friendly competition to find out who could sell more, the fish won hands down with a score of 350 to 6.

10 McStuffins: McDonald's Failed Attempt At Recreating Hot Pockets

Another McDonald’s item that we can’t even believe ever existed is the McStuffins. Back in the 1980s, hot pockets were a big selling item. They were the perfect grab-and-go meal for those in a hurry. In 1993, McDonald’s tried to capitalize on this by releasing their own version that came in four different flavors, two of those being: chicken teriyaki and pepperoni pizza. Unfortunately, they tanked though and ended up being removed faster than it takes to heat one up.

9 McSpaghetti: Another Dinner Item That Customers Had No Interest Of Trying At A Burger Joint

When customers come to a burger joint, they want old fashioned burgers and fries, not Italian food. McDonald’s didn’t comprehend that though and decided they were going to try and branch out by adding items they wouldn’t normally sell and thus McSpaghetti was born. Released in the late 70s, this sauce-drenched dish ended up being removed shortly after its debut. Fun fact, although it failed in America, it succeeded in the Philippines and still served today, but with two pieces of chicken on the side.

8 Onion Nuggets: It Looks Like A Regular Chicken Nugget, But Its Actually A Fried Onion

Not many people remember this, but before there were Chicken Nuggets, McDonald’s had Onion Nuggets. Introduced in the late 70s, the Onion Nugget was their attempt at making bite-sized onion rings basically. Unfortunately for them, their attempt failed, and this menu item disappeared without a trace, never to be heard or seen of again. Right after they’re departure, McDonald’s released Chicken Nuggets in the 1980s, which was a big hit, and to this day is a customer favorite.

7 The Mighty Wings: Overpriced With Too Much Spice

In 1990, McDonald’s decided to incorporate fried chicken to their menu, thus the Mighty Wings was born. This menu item ended up being pulled in 2003 but made its triumphant return in September 2013. Executives were so sure they would big a huge hit this time, they even ordered 50 million pounds of product. Yet again though, they flopped due to pricing and spicing and by December 2013, the company was forced to get rid of 10 million pounds of leftover wings.

6 The Sriracha & Kale Burger: McDonald's Failed Attempt At Staying Trendy

As much as we all love greasy foods, fast food joints adding quick and healthy options such as grilled chicken and salads were a huge hit for health nuts. Trying to combine healthy with not so healthy though, fail. Back when sriracha and kale was a big health food trend, McDonald’s decided to capitalize on it by creating the Sriracha Burger, a healthy, but a greasy sandwich. Instead of being a hit though, it ended up being a full-on flop that reeked of desperation.

5 McDLT: Because Who Wants To Come To A Fast Food Joint To Make Their Own Burger?

In 1984, McDonald's released the McDLT, which was a new burger that gave the customers the option to put together their own sandwiches. Everything was cooked and ready to go in a Styrofoam to-go box with meat and bottom bun on one side and top bun and toppings on others. When news broke that Styrofoam was harmful to the environment in the 90s though, McDonald’s was forced to discontinue the menu item after getting too many complaints.

4 McGratin Croquette: Just An All-Around Weird Mess With An Even Weirder Taste

While a lot of these McDonald’s flops listed in this article are truly bizarre and should have never been attempted, this menu item outdoes them all. The McGratin Croquette is a sandwich that was mainly released for the Japanese market. It consisted of macaroni, mashed potatoes, and shrimp, all squished together and deep-fried in a croquette-like patty that was then sandwiched on a bun with a bed of cabbage. The ending result though was an odd taste that didn’t sit right with customers.

3 McCrab: A Way To Capitalize On Crab Cakes, That Ended Up Being A Flop

Crab cakes are a huge hit down in Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia and just like the hot pockets, McDonald’s thought it was a good idea to capitalize on this by releasing the McCrab back in 2003. Dan Rodricks, a reporter for the Baltimore Sun, did a piece on the new sandwich and wrote, “Will customers craving a quarter-pounder with cheese opt for a 3-5-ounce crab cake sandwich instead?” The simple answer is no. It couldn’t even come close and ended up being removed quickly.

2 Arch Deluxe: A Failed Sandwich Made Just For Adults (Only)

When McDonald’s released the Arch Deluxe, an adult-only burger consisting of a burger with cheese, peppered bacon, and potato buns, their goal was to branch out from their family-friendly vibe, and instead start pleasing more adults. They even went so far as to call it, “The burger with the grown-up taste,” and had a commercial with Ronald McDonald playing “sophisticated” sports such as golf and pool and children looking disgusted by the burger. Thanks to marketing, this burger ended up being a complete flop.

1 Supersizing: A Customer Favorite That Had A Negative Impact On The Body

Ever hear that saying, “bigger is better?” Well, this right here proved that sometimes that isn’t always true. Back in 1993, McDonald’s launch their “Super-Size” anything option. At first, it was actually successful, that is until Morgan Spurlock released his documentary in 2004 called Super-Size Me. This documentary dove deep into the process that eating excess fast food does in the body. It was a real stomach turner. Due to this, McDonald’s had no choice but to remove their Super-Size option.
