There's enough anxiety associated with flying for the first time and the airport experience shouldn't add more stress to that. First-time fliers might be expecting the worst based on airport horror stories but, when it comes down to it, airports are systematic - which means good preparation will help anyone avoid major issues.

From the moment a traveler checks in to making sure that they make it through security without a hitch, there are plenty of unspoken rules that have turned novice travelers into pros. The good news? It's not nearly as complicated as many first-time travelers might think.

Before Arriving At The Airport

One of the biggest mistakes a first-time flier can make is overpacking. It happens and it's very common, but it's also something that can significantly hold up a traveler at security or the baggage check-in. The rules of plane travel are simple and outline very specific requirements for a carry-on bag. Therefore, before ever arriving at the airport, travelers should determine if they're going to attempt to fit everything into a carry-on or opt to check their bags prior to a flight.

Obviously, this can - and should - be determined by the length of the trip. As a general rule of thumb, a long weekend or less should require no more than a single carry-on. Any trip that's a week or more will likely require travelers to check their bags, and so on and so forth.

Always Pack Light

It can be daunting to pack less than what a traveler might think they need. With the exception of remote destinations, chances are, a traveler will be able to purchase anything they've forgotten when they arrive at their destination. When it comes to clothing, travelers usually pack far more than they need out of panic or fear and end up with two checked bags and a slew of clothes that will never be worn on vacation.

Here are some tips for packing:

  • Always check the weather of the destination and pack accordingly
  • Layers are always appropriate - determine one medium layer and one heavy layer, and then pack lighter shirts to avoid dense clothing situations in one's suitcase
  • Consider alternatives to jeans if possible; they take up room and make a suitcase bulky
  • Wear any jackets or sweatshirts on the plane to avoid taking up space in a suitcase
  • Always comply with the liquid volume restrictions (remember: things can be purchased after landing!)

Consider An Early Check-In

Nowadays, checking into the airport could not be simpler. Early check-in will allow travelers to avoid many of the lines and stress of a typical check-in, and it's worth taking the time to do. Most airlines allow travelers to check in up to 24 hours in advance which will drastically save time. Some airports even permit digital copies of any travel documents which means that a passenger might not even need to worry about carrying around a boarding pass if it's already on their phone.

Double Check Documents

One of the biggest hold-ups when it comes to boarding the plane happens right before: forgetting or having the wrong documents. Before getting on the plane, passengers need their boarding passes, IDs, and, for international travel, their passports. Without these things, passengers will not be able to board the plane.

Tip: Be sure to pack ahead of time so that when it is time to leave for the airport, travelers have plenty of time to prepare their documents beforehand.

Important documents don't only refer to plane-related papers, either. This can also include any trip-related itineraries, information, or tickets that are needed upon arrival. Of course, the easiest way to keep track of these things is by having digital copies on one's personal cell phone.

Take Some Time To Settle In

It might seem efficient to leave with just enough time to arrive at the airport, check-in, and board, but this is probably the worst thing that a traveler can do. If flying is new to someone then, chances are, the airport is also a new destination. Depending on the airport, travelers might find that they're better suited to show up early and actually take advantage of what their local airport has to offer. Whether it's exploring one of many delicious restaurants, checking out the shopping (grab a good book for the plane!), or simply relaxing in the lounge beforehand, it'll be reassuring to know that one is in the right place with plenty of time to spare.

Tip: Consider investing in access to an airport lounge -some even have options for day-use without any kind of special pass or credit card membership.
