A terrified family on a boating trip in Washington State called the cops when a pod of humpback whales swam under their boat.

To be fair to the family, they were in a relatively small motorboat while humpback whales are typically the size of a bus. That kind of size disparity can make anyone awfully nervous.

And to be fair again, at least one member of the family understood that humpbacks are gentle, intelligent creatures that usually just want to see what’s going on rather than capsize a small family outing.

Darren Lucianna and his family were in Puget Sound last weekend when he noticed a pod of humpback whales. They drove closer and stopped their motor in order to avoid injuring the animals, and then the humpbacks returned the favor and swam closer for a closer look as well.

Lucianna recorded the whole experience on his cell phone. Darren is heard to be completely awestruck by the majestic sea creatures. His family, on the other hand, were on the verge of a mutiny.

“I don’t wanna die,” one family member can be heard saying while another sobs openly somewhere off camera. Darren, entranced by the whales, tries to calm his family by repeating “relax” several times. It does not help.

When one humpback maneuvers closer and exhales, the Lucianna family can be heard collectively screaming. Even Darren can’t help but be startled at the unexpectedly loud noise. When the same humpback then lazily rolls over to stare up at the human passengers--necessary owing to the fact that humpback whales’ eyes are on the sides of its head--the rest of Darren’s family utterly freak.

That’s when a woman can be heard saying “I’m going to call 911,” and then tells officers that there are a group of “grey whales” underneath her boat.

We don’t have the benefit of hearing the conversation with the dispatcher, but we’d like to think whoever was on the other end of the call was desperately trying not to burst out laughing.

Eventually, Darren listens to his family’s desperate pleas to flee the scene. Later he’d post the video to his Facebook page, where it quickly went viral for the complete overreaction of the family. His post has since been removed, but the internet has a long memory.
