Everyone has heard of the dramatic fjords of Norway and Alaska, but one place in the world they are equaled is the southern coast of Chile. There, one finds massive fjords and one of the largest national parks in the world - the Kawesqar National Park. The Patagonian Fjords are a once-in-a-lifetime experience far from civilization and one of the few places one can see icebergs in South America.

Both New Zealand and Norway have fantastic fjords that are worth seeing, but perhaps travelers will find the fjords of Patagonia even more spectacular. The stunning fjords of Alaska are best explored by ship, with Juneau located in the center of the Alaskan Panhandle - go in the right time, and one will see brown bears feeding on salmon as they head up the rivers.

The Patagonian Fjords - One Of The Last Great Wildernesses

Without a doubt, the Chilean Fjords count as some of nature's greatest wonders. The Chilean Patagonian fjords lay between the latitudes of Cape Horn (55° S) and Reloncavi Estuary (42° S). They are located at the southern extreme of the continent, not so far from the Antarctic Peninsula.

The fjords are also home to the Kawesqar National Park - one of the largest in the world. The park is home to large swaths of archipelagos made up of a mosaic of rainforests, glaciers, fjords, lakes, valleys, mountain ranges, and a whole load of wildlife.

Some of the wildlife to be found in the region include chilla, culpeo, pumas, huemul, and gato montes. Offshore, the kelp forests of southern Chile are among the healthiest in the world - they are also home to shallow water colonies of cold-water corals.

  • Access: By Boat

The Patagonian Fjords region of Chile is very remote and very difficult to reach by land, so most visitors come by ship around the coast. There are options of taking an extended expedition overland in this wilderness region or exploring the fjords and coves by ship. Some tours start in Argentina at the southern port city of Ushuaia.
