One of the most popular and well-loved vacation destinations in the world for children and adults alike, Disney World in Orlando, Florida has a lot of well-known attractions, rides, and restaurants. However, the theme park also has a good deal of secrets that only a few people know to look for while they are wandering through the different worlds.

Disney himself was very particular and intentional when constructing the park and when it opened in 1971, it only consisted of Magic Kingdom. Almost 50 years later, the theme park has grown into four separate parks that each contain their own unique flair and experience.

From hidden non-Disney characters that blend seamlessly into the foliage to an entire underground system that only employees are allowed to travel through, the park has a lot more to offer than meets the eye. Below are some of the best-kept secrets Disney World has kept hidden from the general public.

4 Hidden Employee Tunnels

Disney World is well known for its attention to small details to bring the magic of the entire experience alive for the whole family. Each of the four theme parks is very different from the other and when guests are in one world, they often can not see the other worlds in order to keep the authenticity and consistency.

One world that is completely hidden from guests, however, is the long maze of tunnels underground that only employees have access to so that they can get to their posts without having to cross different worlds and create a disruption in the guest experience.

Huffpost reports that these long hallways span almost 400,000 feet and are truly a world onto themselves since they not only include passageways for employees and characters to get from one end of the park to the other, they also include dressing rooms, storage for props, and staff cafeterias so employees in costume can have some downtime to refuel before their next appearance.

Most people who visit Disney World go to experience adventures that may not be possible in their daily lives. But for those who want to make even a mundane activity just a little more magical, they can set up an appointment at Harmony Barber Shop on Main Street in the Magic Kingdom.

The fully staffed and functional Barber Shop is distinguishable to guests with a classic striped barber pole. The options for haircuts are not much different than regular barbershops, but getting one in the most magical place on earth does make it a bit more special than going to the corner shop.

If families are traveling with little ones who have never received a haircut before, Travel + Leisure writes that they can book a special package especially for their first haircut that rewards them with a certificate and Mickey ears they can take home to remember forever.

2 The American Flags on Main Street Are Fake

National regulations for real American flags require that they be raised at sunrise, lowered at sunset, and flown at half-mast during times of national crises. However, since this would potentially cause a distraction to guests who are trying to immerse themselves in the magic of the experience, each American flag is missing just a small detail- a star here or a stripe there.

This was not a mistake, it was done on purpose in order to get around the regulations so that the flags could line Main street at all times and still be respectful of national regulations regarding authentic American flags.

According to Travel + Leisure, the flags don’t just serve a decorative purpose. In addition to adding to the experience and in the spirit of keeping guests protected and at ease, the flag poles also serve as lightning rods just in case the weather in Florida gets to be a bit much.

Even with prior knowledge of the last secret on this list, visitors to Disney World may still not be able to spot a captivating street performer named DiVine. Although she is not a part of the Disney franchise, according to Disneyways, the character is contracted by Disney to entertain guests in the Animal Kingdom between Africa and Asia.

What makes her so incredible? DiVine walks gracefully around in stilts so she is literally larger than life and is painted green with foliage that helps her camouflage herself amongst the trees and greenery in the park. Depending on her movements and contortions, she can be between 7 feet and 16 feet.

Since she is meant to portray a slice of nature, DiVine does not make direct eye contact or speak. Instead, she moves slowly so that if guests are not looking for her specifically, they might just miss her as they walk from one attraction to the next.
