As the curve concerning the worldwide number of Covid-19 infected and dead gets steeper, more and more countries are taking measures to see how they can break the pattern of human contact via voluntary isolation, quarantine or a rampant clean-up of residences and workplaces.

While several nations have taken all of those measures, a few of them have either closed their borders entirely or have implemented partial shutdowns, limited them to citizens coming home or barring people from a shortlist of countries from entry.

The following is a list of countries that continue to keep their borders open, although given that Covid-19 (also known as the coronavirus) continues to spread across the globe, its contents could easily get shorter day by day. While leaders encourage their respective citizens to stay at home, there's no doubt a few travelers have reasons to head to another country. For more updated information, those people are advised to check travel advisories affecting their destinations.

Several African National Borders Still Open

Africa has been the least hit of all the continents, which explains why more than 30 countries continue to leave their borders open. Those on the northwest bulge of the continent include Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Cote d'Ivoire, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Togo, and Western Sahara.

Open-border nations in the northeast include the Central African Republic, Chad, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia, and South Sudan.

Further south, countries that haven't set border limits include Angola, Burundi, Congo, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eswatini, Gabon, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Cases have remained relatively low throughout the continent until mid-March when at least 30 countries started reporting cases of the coronavirus. For once, poverty was on the side of most of Africa's residents, since few could afford to travel internationally, which has helped keep the infected rate low. At the same time, years of civil war and famine have had adverse effects on tourism, further insulating them from the pandemic.

But once the virus gets more of a toehold in Africa, researchers are fearing the worst, since most countries on the continent lack a healthcare system robust enough to handle a pandemic.

Asia Remains Free-flowing in Southeast

For a country that was ground zero for the coronavirus, it seems odd that China's borders remain open. But it might be a moot point since most partial and total closures would have China on the banned list anyway. That's likely the same case for Iran, which has one of the highest infections rates in the world, yet it's still accessible to travelers.

Much of the Middle East has taken border control measures save for Israel, Palestine, and Syria. Immediately further east Armenia, Azerbaijan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan are among nations yet to take action on its borders.

Besides China, Southeast Asia has several other pockets of territory still open which include Cambodia, Indonesia, Japan, Lao PDR, Mongolia, Myanmar, North Korea, Papua New Guinea, Taiwan, and Vietnam.

Japan is monitoring the progress of the virus, especially in light of the Tokyo Olympics this summer.  Although it was among the first nations hit by Covid-19, its rate of outbreaks has leveled off to the point where it's not rushing to close its borders. Meanwhile, Vietnam has kept its borders open although visitors must immediately be quarantined for two weeks.

Europe Likely To Clamp Down On What's Left

As the European Community tries to reach a consensus over whether the continent should be under a total lockdown and its borders completely closed, countries like Albania, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Estonia, France, Iceland, Kosovo, Luxembourg, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Romania, Slovakia, Sweden, and the UK have no restrictions on visitor entry.

Not surprisingly, none of their borders touch Italy, which has a Coronavirus death toll exceeding that of China and is still rising steadily. Meanwhile, Spain is also a high-risk nation, and while neighboring Portugal imposed an immediate lockdown, its borders remain open.

As for Britain, it's not part of the European Community initiative and because it shares an open border with Ireland, the two countries have to reach a consensus before any actions taken on their boundaries.

The Americas Almost All Closed

One of the most aggressive responses was in South America, where borders are either partially or totally closed, except French Guiana. In North America, only Cuba and Nicaragua remain open.

Curiously, Mexico's border remained open with the United States when the U.S. decided to close it to all non-essential traffic effective March 21. The decision was made to put into practice recommendations by the Centre for Disease Control to refuse entry to anyone attempting to cross the border. The closure is reportedly similar to the U.S. arrangement concerning the common border it shares with Canada.

Mexico's southern neighbors have adopted some measure of control over its boundaries. Honduras is totally closed, while Belize has shut down most of its entry ports.
