The Statue of Liberty is one of the very greatest landmarks in all of America and all of the world. It is a very powerful symbol of America's values as a nation and quest for freedom. It is something that everyone should visit if they have the chance should they ever go to New York City. But those wanting to visit will need to book in advance as it is a very popular destination with only a limited capacity to receive visitors.

See here for a list of things to do in NYC if one only has 24 hours.

Visiting The Statue

  • Built: Dedicated on October 28, 1886
  • Designated: National Monument in 1924

There are a number of ticket options and the Statue of Liberty is also managed together with Ellis Island - so consider visiting that isle of hope and tears too. Note that the only way to get to these islands is via the Statue City Cruises and the entrance fees are included in the ferry ticket. Don't believe anyone there if they say anything different. The departure points are in Battery Park, New York, and at Liberty State Park, New Jersey.

Also while it is possible to enter the pedestal and crown of the Statue of Liberty, it has not been possible to access the torch for the last hundred or so years. It seems that only Marvel's X-Men are allowed to save the planet from there.

Warning On False Tickets

Unfortunately, there are a number of fraudulent ticket vendors in New York trying to sell false tickets to unsuspecting tourists. Be aware of scammers if visiting New York City and are planning to visit Liberty and Ellis Island. The National Park Service says.

"There are many aggressive, unauthorized ticket sellers who will try to sell tickets to the Statue of Liberty near Battery Park in NYC. These individuals will often try to scam people through misrepresentation and over-charging. We highly recommend purchasing tickets in advance. The only on-site location to purchase authorized tickets is the Statue City Cruises official ticket office inside Castle Clinton in Battery Park. Plan ahead if possible, and avoid these scammers selling overpriced and/or fake tickets."
