To say that the first seven months of 2020 have been stressful would be an understatement. Collectively, the world has encountered anxiety on a level rarely seen, and with anxiety comes the search for relief from it. Every country has its own method of stress relief and while many are only familiar with their own comforts, it can help to try something new. Not only will the act of a new practice serve as a distraction, but it can also help to refocus the mind.

According to Dr. Jordan Brown, of the Atlanta Psychiatric Center, the events that have unfolded thus far - especially those relating to travel - have led to stress on a catastrophic level, over routine things that wouldn't normally cause anxiety. With all that's going on in the world, learning how to decompress in a new way is a welcome admission.

France: Wine And A Snack

It's no surprise that relaxing in France revolves around a petit aperitif. This is the traditional act of indulging in a glass of wine and it can be far more relaxing that one might think. With the addition of a small snack such as spiced nuts, a pastry, or even a cheese or charcuterie serving, it can be comforting as well. Pop on some classical (or whatever low-key music is soothing to the ears) and take it all in.

Russia: Sauna, Or Just A Steamy Bath

In Russia, a traditional method of relaxation involves going to the sauna. A steamy, hot bath will work just as well, though. Many times, comforting aching muscles and finding ways to soothe physical discomfort can help in strides with mental relaxation. Adding aromatic bath salts or oils can trigger pleasant feelings as well as a sense of calm.

Thailand: Therapeutic Massage Techniques

Thailand's ritual revolves heavily around pressure points, and it's proven that by stimulating these points, serotonin is released into the body. Kneading the points at the base of the neck, as well as its surrounding areas, can greatly reduce tension. Combine this with controlled breathing techniques and feel stress melt away.

Argentina: Eating Together, And It Can Be Done Virtually

In Argentina, the act of having a meal together with family and/or friends is believed to relieve stress. All it takes is a FaceTime or Zoom call to have one's entire family or friend group together, and while it's not necessarily the same as being there, it can alleviate feelings of isolation and solitude. Try playing a virtual game or taking a virtual "vacation" together!

India: Practice Smiling And Laughing

Smiling has its benefits! It not only allows the brain to switch gears as it perceives the physical motions of one's face, but the act of doing it should just feel good. Laughing is a great way to change the brain's chemistry, and watching funny videos or listening to an entertaining podcast is a great way to get going.

Ireland: Get Moving!

The key to relieving anxiety in Ireland is sometimes as simple as a brisk walk. This works best during cooler months but can also work well at dusk or sunrise. Fresh air has significant health benefits and even a walk around the block or taking some time to sit outside can be enough to refocus and calm the mind. A jog or run is even better - the physical activity of any kind has been proven to alleviate stress as well.

China: A Hot Foot Soak

Reflexology is common in Asia, where the pressure points located on the feet are believed to correspond with receptors all over the body. Therefore, it makes sense that a hot foot soak would do the entire body some good while relieving tension built up in the feet - where much of it sits. Epsom salts are a great addition to this.
