Many travelers like to spend several months at a time in Asia, as the continent offers such a large quantity of beautiful and tourist-friendly cities.
There are just so many places to see over in Asia, with all sorts of tasty foods, plus unique cultures and history. Thus, it's no wonder that the six of the top 10 most visited cities for the year in 2018 are in Asia.
GlobalData (h/t Travel Daily News), revealed the numbers for the 10 most visited cities around the world last year. Bangkok, Thailand took the top spot with 22.43 million international visitor arrivals, followed by the Greater London area at 19.09 million.
After those two, Singapore came in at No. 3 with 18.51 million visitor arrivals. Dubai (15.92 million), Tokyo (14.24 million), Hong Kong (14.10 million), New York City (13.6 million), Greater Paris (13.22 million), Seoul (12.41 million), and Shenzhen (12.20 million) rounded out the top 10.
Aditi Dutta Chowdhury, a GlobalData Economic Research Analyst, explained that Thailand has "tourism friendly visa policies," as well as "strong promotional efforts and low cost connectivity," which were key factors in bringing in such a high number in tourists.
It was also outlined by Travel Daily News that 30 and 90-day visa policies in countries like China, USA and the United Kingdom were strong factors for bringing in such a high number of tourists.
There were very few changes in the top 10 for 2018 compared to the previous year. Last year, GlobalData reported (h/t Travelweek) that Bangkok was No. 1 with 20.80 million international visitors.
London was also second with 20.40 million, followed by Singapore with 17.42 million. The only difference from the 2018 top 10? Kuala Lumpur appeared on the list for 2017, but Greater Paris climbed its way into the top 10 for 2018.
Cities like Bangkok are obviously cheaper for travelers than major cities like Tokyo, London and New York - so it's no surprise that Thailand's capital took the top spot here.
