No airline can get everything right all the time. But, passengers do have standards. And that means that when an airline does something really awful, their customers expect and deserve an apology.

Sometimes, airlines try to sweep things under the rug so their brand's reputation doesn't take a hit. But unfortunately for them, things tend to grow via social media until they can't ignore the issue any longer.

Of course, there was no shortage of airline mess-ups in 2019, and plenty of airlines were on the hook for causing passenger problems. From emotional distress over how they were treated on a flight to missing their plane entirely due to computer errors, passengers had plenty of complaints. In short, they were definitely owed these apologies.

Here are Alaska Airlines and 19 other airlines that had to apologize to passengers in 2019.

20 Alaska Airlines Quadrupled Passengers' Flight Time

An Alaska Airlines flight was supposed to last about seven hours, but instead, it took 30, noted Boston 25 News. After flight attendants deemed a woman's "Hail Satan" shirt was offensive, they ordered her to change. The passenger changed so she could make her flight but later complained to the airline. They apologized later for what the passenger said was discrimination; the attempt at a humorous slogan comes from a nontheistic religious affiliation, The Hill reported.

15 Minor Misses Flight Due To United's Error

United Airlines messed up big, Time reported. An unaccompanied minor, who was 14 at the time, was put on a flight to Germany instead of Sweden. Eventually, they got the boy off the plane before it took off, but the missed connection meant seven extra hours at the airport.

13 Interjet Flubbed Flights Due To Staff Shortage

A lesser-known airline called Interjet wound up canceling flights in 2019 because it was understaffed. They apologized, but really, are we going to forgive them?

10 Bummed-Out Members Accept Southwest's Apology On Companion Passes

9 Spirit Airlines Spooks Passengers With Flight Change Emails

Spirit Airlines is another that spooked holiday passengers with a system-wide glitch, USA Today reported. 5 Horizon Air Scrambles To Address Pilot Safety Problems

Horizon Air, which is connected to Alaska Airlines, has been busy in 2019. From addressing safety concerns with its pilots to union issues, Horizon Air isn't exactly a model airline, as reported by Seattle Times. Of course, an apology is in order for putting the airline's passengers at risk.

4 FastJet Is A Bit Too Slow Getting To The Runway

Delays on the tarmac are common, but running out of fuel immediately prior to takeoff isn't so standard. But as ZimLive explained, that's exactly what happened to a FastJet flight in Johannesburg. The plane taxied to the runway but then had to cancel its take-off because it was completely out of fuel. Apologies from FastJet ensued.
