Why is it that out of a possible 194 countries and at least twice that number of famous cities in every country, tourists seem to flock to the same spots time and time again? We estimate there are at least 400 different cities where tourists could spend their vacations, but they still end up in the same places, it looks like it. These are tourist attractions, most of them are already considered tourist traps, that always get a majority of the tourism, not just in their respective countries, but all over the planet. Whether it’s the historical or cultural significance, natural beauty, or popularity, these places have one thing in common; unruly tourists. They are borderline aggressive and bothersome, annoying people who invade our personal space, shout things only they understand, and sometimes kill our own exploratory and good mood.

Amidst the mooing cattle sounds in busy and crowded tourist spots, most tourists still find satisfaction in these places, and that’s why these will forevermore be the top tourist destinations, no matter how many tourists visit them every day. We’ve gathered a list of the 25 most overrated tourist attractions that are still unbelievably popular to this day. Read on and maybe adjust your itinerary.

24 24. Pyramids of Giza

The Egyptian Pyramids are the most popular pyramids in the world. Together with the Sphinx, they are part of the original natural wonders of the world. It is truly magnificent, one big reason why they are still visited by millions of people every year. These people seem not to mind the heat, the Pyramids are right in the outskirts of Cairo, but in the desert. The heat and the crowd, plus the annoying peddlers, those are some things one would have to get through to enjoy the ancient wonders.

23 23. Statue of Liberty

It has been a running joke that France gifted the statue because it’s a horrible-looking statue. But that does not stop tourists from visiting Lady Liberty in New York.

It sits on Ellis Island, another famous tourist spot, and looks over New York as a giant lady lighthouse.

Crowds are massive, which led to several major renovations through the years. Still it stands, and still, it is frequented by tourists every day, a true icon of New York and the United States.

22 22. The Red Light District

A tour of Amsterdam’s Red Light District is more of an R rated tour for the adults. But you might be in for a disappointment, it’s not like it was before.

The oldest profession in the world has also evolved and are now connected to the rest of the world through their smartphones.

So, instead of working girls anxiously greeting you, they’d be nose deep on their mobiles. Go and wander off and see the rest of the Netherlands.

21 21. The Louvre

There is a gallery in the Louvre that looks like it’s giving away free gourmet meals every day. The people who are gathered there makes it look like the rest of the museum is closed on the holiday.

The tourists are crammed in that small area to look at Leonardo Da Vinci’s famous work, the Mona Lisa.

One would think it the most popular painting in the world for the people to ignore the other works of art is arguably the most popular museum in the world, that says a lot about the Mona Lisa.

20 20. The Four Corners

This is where tourists go crazy, a tourist spot that attracts a lot of people, but they only stay for a few minutes. There is nothing else to do where the corners of four states meet in the United States. With the abundance of space at the corners of the great states of Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, and Colorado, people get creative with their poses and picture-taking. It’s rare to find an almost deserted tourist spot, so do whatever you like, take as many pictures as you can and take your time.

19 19. Hobbiton

Hobbiton is the fictional little town Bilbo and Frodo Baggins are from. Fans of the Lord of the Rings would discover that the place is real, and Hobbiton is in New Zealand, not in the Shire.

Truly, it is a magical place for fans of the books and the films. The letdown is that the Hobbit houses, with their cute circular doors, are just a facade.

There is nothing inside, someone should tell the people at Hobbiton to make an effort to put some Hobbit furniture in the halfling cases.

18 18. Leaning Tower of Pisa

The Leaning Tower of Pisa has become a “since we’re here, we might as well check it out” tourist spot in Italy. Italy has far more beautiful spots and historic buildings. People still want to check out the leaning tower, which many say does not lean quite as it does in the pictures. Here you will witness tourists doing the same annoying poses with the famed tower, one cheesy thing we might be reluctant to do once we see everyone doing it.

17 17. Times Square

Even the locals try and avoid Times Square as much as they can, it’s just so crowded with tourists that you’d have to elbow your way to get to where you want to go.

It is a famous landmark, an icon popularized by countless films and TV shows, the only time one can breathe there is in the early hours of the morning.

And even then, the place is still not without people. If you’re still going, do it during nighttime, as all the billboards will be lit up, much like what you see in the movies.

16 16. The Little Mermaid

The Little Mermaid statue is kind of like The Four Corners version of Denmark. Once you get there, see it, and take pictures, there’s really not much else you can do. At least in the Four Corners one can do acrobatic pictures, the statue in Copenhagen sits on a rock in the water. It’s small and not very fascinating. But people still flock the famous tourist site. Well, it’s a good first stop as any on a tour of Copenhagen and the rest of Denmark.

15 15. Loch Ness

The legend of the Loch Ness monster is better left at that, a distant legend. It is a great story, and one that’s been adapted to numerous film and TV versions.

Visiting the place and flying across the globe for the reason to see Loch Ness is not worth the time, money, and effort.

Most of the tourists hope to catch a glimpse of the Loch Ness creature, but every tourist has been out of lack by far. So book some tours and visit other destinations in the peaceful country of Scotland while you’re there.

14 14. Las Vegas Strip

There may not be anything more rambunctious, more naughty, more wild, and more uncontrollable, than the crowds that visit Las Vegas. The Strip is home to a stag party and bachelorette groups alike. That alone makes for people going crazy and all-out in the city coined Sin City. Other crowds visit the Strip to experience the countless casinos to try their luck and take the house, with less luck, usually. It really lives up to the tagline “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.”

13 13. Stonehenge

The ignorant tourist would say, what is the big deal with a bunch of big stones falling in a circle in the middle of a grassy field? Wiltshire’s pride and glory is believed to have been standing there since at least the 2,000 BC.

It is one of the most famous landmarks in all of United Kingdom and has been normally flocked to and abused by unruly tourists through the years.

If you absolutely want to go there, try avoiding the summer solstice crowd, unless that’s what you’re aiming for.

12 12. Eiffel Tower

The Eiffel Tower, the Statue of Liberty, and the Empire State Building. All these very popular and iconic structures have another thing common, they’re a great view from a distance but is really something that’s not a big deal when you are in the actual structure. Every tourist wants to climb the Eiffel Tower, so surely there will be long lines. Maybe we can just find a nice restaurant with a view to the French tower. Or do it after, for sure you’d be hungry after waiting in line.

11 11. Hollywood Walk of Fame

Nothing ever beats a tour of the famous celebrities and personalities and their handprints than a free one courtesy of the Hollywood Walk of Fame. So, naturally, every tourist that comes their way to California has this destination on their list. This place is a stop, kneel, take a picture, and go to the next one kind of spot for countless tourists. Naturally, we have a lot of the so-called celebrities on the show as well, Spiderman, Marilyn Monroe, and the occasional homeless guy.

10 10. The Parthenon

The Parthenon located in Athens, Greece, is currently under construction. It is undergoing major restoration and will be out of commission for months more, maybe years.

It is not a good time of the year to take a trip to Greece in the hopes of seeing the mythical Acropolis of Athena.

This complete facelift will ensure the beauty of these ancient buildings will be preserved and maintained. There are literally scaffolding, workers with hard hats, cranes, and the works if you go and visit Parthenon today.

9 9. Taj Mahal

Before going on a trip to India and visiting the Taj Mahal, maybe set your expectations by watching the Danny Boyle film Slumdog Millionaire. This multiple Academy Award-winning film slightly parodies India, but there is a truth to it. Like the hundreds of shoes and slippers from off tourists’ feet before the entrances of the Taj Mahal. The pollution around the city of Agra and the Taj Mahal does not help with the aesthetic beauty of the magnificent palace at all.

8 8. The Empire State Building

Your vacation itinerary in New York will be erratic, but if you schedule the Empire State Building on one of these vacation days, oh, be sure to schedule little else on that same day. Some enjoy the view from the building, while some have to just be in it. These are all natural, as it is virtually the most popular building of the past few generations. But the crowds and the long lines make it a towering challenge to really enjoy this King Kong building.

7 7. Boracay

The island of Boracay located in the Western Visayas region of the Philippines has been closed off for environmental revitalization for six months.

It has recently been opened to the public, the local government just was not able to monitor and uphold environmental laws that protect the country’s many beaches.

It led to a rather unfortunate closing off from international and local tourists because of the pollution situation. We hope the famous beach bounces back and becomes one of the most beautiful in the world again.

6 6. The Great Wall

If you did enough research on China’s Great Wall, you will learn a few things about it. The first one is that there is a way to avoid the crowds of tourists that want to see and step on the tremendously popular tourist attraction.

For a structure that’s more than 13,000 miles spanning the whole land of China, we would think that there must be somewhere we can step foot inside the Wall other than in Beijing.

There are other points of entry, but be careful, some of them are severely damaged, some of them even have holes and fallen brick walls.

5 5. Niagara Falls

People visiting the Falls try and ignore the pollution of the famous falls. But this is the effect of tourism on a natural tourist site, no matter what measures you take, there will always be annoying tourists who seem to have not a single follicle of care for the people around them and for their surroundings. Some suggest visiting the Niagara Falls on Canada’s side rather than the New York side. Maybe we’ll find more respecting tourists there, too.
