Hotel upgrades are great, right? We have the chance to snag bigger rooms, better views, and maybe even a fully-stocked mini-bar.

What we don't realize is that many times, those upgrades might not even be worth it. The catch is that figuring out when to upgrade and when not to can be a bit of a bummer; sometimes hotels will offer things for a 'great' price and our pampered desires get the best of us.

So what's really worth it? Well, for starters, it's easier to say what probably isn't worth it. From thread counts to top-floor rooms, we've got all the things that you want but shouldn't necessarily splurge for.

Here's how to keep our wallets closed and our budgets intact when it comes to deciding what we really need for an overnight stay.

20 Upgrading To Higher Thread Counts

One of the best parts about staying in a fancy hotel is that we know we're about to sleep on a dream-like mattress. This dreamy experience usually includes the crisp, fresh sheets that we know and love, but think about it: Does anyone consider the thread count when we're exhausted from our first vacation day? Nope.

19 Rooms With A View, Unless Travelers Plan On Staying Room-Bound

The ocean is a beautiful thing to wake up to in the morning and a city skyline is a gorgeous sight to fall asleep to. The problem is that both of these things come with some pretty hefty price tags. Throw in a balcony and suddenly, we're sacrificing one month's rent to pay for our hotel upgrade.

18 'Faster' WiFi As Opposed To Free WiFi

WiFi is WiFi. When nearly every phone these days comes equipped with data, not to mention our own personal hot spots, 'faster WiFi' is a thing of the past. Now, we're looking for any WiFi and if there isn't any, we're not likely staying in that hotel.

17 Breakfast Room Service If There's No Complimentary Service

No complimentary service? Well, we're out... just kidding. Most people forget that when it comes to food, they are allowed to leave the hotel. While it might not be the most convenient thing, it is a fun and cool way to check out new places and find a new breakfast fave.

16 Room Service, Period, Can Be Totally Overrated

In the days when pizza guys will deliver straight to our door (or Uber Eats, or whoever), there's really no need for room service. It's a well-known fact that it's often overpriced and most of the time, they'll charge an arm and a leg just for fries with a burger.

15 Bathroom Upgrades Such As A Rain Showerhead

Trust us, they're not all they're cracked up to be. Rain shower heads are meant to provide a more natural experience when showering, but it'll be luxurious enough just being in a bathroom with a marble countertop. That aside, it's often not worth it for short stays or weekend getaways.

14 Fully-Stocked Minibars Usually Aren't Worth It

Ah, the mini-bar. Many a hotel-goer has rummaged around for grub in here after a long plane or car ride. Additionally, many of us have become disappointed and even disgruntled when finding out we owed an extra $50 for a water and a bag of cheez-its. Don't be tempted.

13 Turndown Service, If It's Not Already Included

Let's be real for a second: Is it really that much of a pain to make our own beds? Not really. Turn-down is usually, more often than not, included in a hotel stay. If it's not, then this is usually an upgrade that we simply do not need... We're just going to sleep in it again, anyway.

12 Access To The Hotel's Gym Is A No-Go

It's one thing to go to an actual gym where people clean up their machines with the oversized spray bottles and equipment is well-maintained. Hotel gyms can be spectacular and dreamy, but only when we're paying well for them. Having this as an option is great, but so is hitting the pavement and going for a run.

11 Rooms With Hot Tubs Aren't All They're Cut Out To Be

Studies have shown that hot tubs aren't the cleanest things around. Unlike pools, they're not treated with any chemicals to keep them free of harmful bacteria. All that stands between us and those jacuzzi walls is some cleaner and whoever had the room before us... Still a worthy upgrade?

10 Don't Fall For Champagne And Other Romantic Services

It's super cute and can be a really beautiful display of love toward your significant other, but is it really worth it? With the amount paid to someone else to do this, it's often much more thoughtful just to do something like this ourselves.

9 Entertainment Upgrades Can Be Completely Useless

It's totally unnecessary for us to pay $10 per hour (just spitballing here) for additional movie channels. Most hotels have basic cable and then some now, and that's usually enough. Additionally, with things like the Nintendo Switch and PS Vita, we can take our shows with us anywhere.

8 In-Room Breakfast Bars (Including Coffee Makers) Might Seem Tempting

If the hotel doesn't have a breakfast counter in-room, that usually means they're offering complimentary coffee and breakfast downstairs - take advantage of it. We don't really need a full coffee setup unless we drink it like maniacs but hey, to each their own.

7 Upgrading Via A Discount Or Affiliate Site Can Just Make More Trouble

It's always best to get an upgrade directly from the source. We're not saying that you'll end up with a bad room, but we are saying that you might end up on a lower level with some very loud neighbors - all for the price of a better view or bigger bathroom. What's more important, sleep or a whirlpool tub?

6 Bathrobes Require A Lot More Fees Than We Thought

Some hotels even check whether or not we've snagged them which is totally understandable, but often not known. If they've even been worn, hotels have the right to charge our cards for our use of their service, and if the bathrobe is dirty? Well, someone has to pay to clean it. Just bring your own.

5 Skincare Products Are Great, But We Should Bring Or Buy Our Own

Super bougie hotels often offer top of the line skin care products which aren't always included in the total price. While we may be tempted to scope out that new YSL lotion, what we're not ready for is the forty-dollar price tag that comes attached to it. We'll stick with our St. Ives, thank you very much.

4 There Are Times When Even A Room Upgrade Isn't Worth It

If you don't know what you almost had before, how can you miss it? Room upgrades aren't worth it when it comes to hotels that are already high-end. While the offer might sound enticing, think about how much you already get - will an extra towel and a glass shower make that much of a difference?

3 Upgrades That Include Being On A Lower Floor Are A Negative

It's very possible that we could end up rooming below someone like this (see above) or, even worse, a group of kids. We all know what that means: Lots of excited little feet running around at all hours of the night. If you have a top-floor room, it's best to keep it.

2 The Real Question: Suites Vs. Deluxe Rooms

This is often a personal preference. The one time a room upgrade might be worth it is when transitioning from a regular or deluxe room to a suite. Suites offer more room (literally, more rooms), full kitchens, and even bathroom amenities and upgrades. However, they might not differ much from Deluxe rooms - do your research.

1 Upgrades To Full Kitchens Might Not Include All We're Used To At Home

"We have the option to upgrade to a room with a kitchen? Great!" We all thought, before we realized we had exactly one spoon and a tiny frying pan. Not every kitchen comes fully-stocked, and there's still the issue of buying food... And washing dishes.
