Canada’s nickname is “Hollywood North”, and more celebrities vacation in this friendly northern nation than any other country in the world. They don’t only vacation; they shoot films, own homes, and cottages, and some even live in Canada full time!

Why Canada? For starters, Canada is a friendly, stable and advanced country where celebrities know their property and persons are safe. Canada has stunning natural scenery unlike anything else in the world, and a deep respect for the law and rights means celebrities don’t have to worry about being ripped off by corrupt officials like they would in other countries.

Which celebs come to Canada? Hollywood celebs, for starters. Big events like the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) draws all the biggest stars of the silver screen, and international superstars can be found on every corner in Toronto during the month of September. The Montreal Grand Prix draws a wide array of Hollywood actors and pop stars, while those looking to relax buy massive mansions in the Muskokas of Ontario or the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia.

What should you do if you spot a celebrity at one of the places listed below (or anywhere in Canada)? Nothing! Be nice and nod hello and continue on your way. Canada has a reputation among the international elite of being a place where they can be themselves in public. If you really want to interact, offer to buy their coffee and maybe they’ll agree to a selfie (Bill Murray does this all the time when he visits Canada). To find a celeb in Canada, check out one of these 20 places!

20 20. Tofino, BC

Tofino is the westernmost point in Canada, and nearby Long Beach is a surfer’s paradise. The rustic lifestyle and the isolation of Tofino make it the perfect place for celebrities to kick back and relax, and that they do! Just out of sight of the main drag you’ll find a few “cottages” that are more akin to wooden mansions, complete with their own marinas and swimming pools. Will and Kate famously included Tofino on their Canadian honeymoon in 2011, but other celebrities have been spotted here, including Selena Gomez, Owen Wilson, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson!

19 19. Niagara Falls, Ontario

Niagara Falls has been a celebrity hotspot for a long time. Not only are films shot here throughout the year, bringing actors, directors and film crews to the city, but celebrities come to marvel at this natural wonder, honeymoon in Niagara’s ritzy hotels, and sometimes, as in the case of Kobe Bryant, just to pop across the border and relax for an afternoon on the Canadian side! Of course, the most famous celebrity to be photographed in Niagara Falls is Marylin Monroe, but if you’re keeping a sharp eye out, you can spot more recent celebrities mixing with the crowds throughout the year.

18 18. Bay of Fundy, Nova Scotia

The Bay of Fundy has recently become a celebrity destination thanks to its jaw-dropping scenery and friendly locals. There are a few million-dollar cottages going up around the region as the area becomes more popular. Melissa McCarthy is known to visit the area often, and Seth Green was once spotted at a local convenience store. If you’re in the Canadian Maritimes, you should check out the Bay of Fundy when the tide dramatically goes out a few miles every day. Not only will you see the beauty and wonder of nature in action, you might also spot a human celebrity!

17 17. Chateau Frontenac, Quebec City

The Fairmont Chateau Frontenac dominates the Quebec City skyline, and if you’re rich enough to afford its $500 - $1000 per night rates, you may just come across a celebrity or two. This five-star luxury hotel is known to be frequented by the Royals on their visits to Canada, and Celine Dion, Katie Holmes and the late Michael Jackson have all stayed there.

If you don’t want to (or can’t) pay the exorbitant rates to stay here, you can visit as a tourist and even book a guided tour, where you might just run into Prince Charles or even the ghost of MJ!

16 16. The Windsor Arms Hotel, Toronto

Toronto is filled with celebrities at any given time, and many of them stay at the heritage Windsor Arms Hotel when they’re in town. This hotel retains its past-century charm, something several celebrities such as George Clooney and Eminem admire whenever they visit Toronto.

The Windsor Arms advertises “discreet luxury”, a definite nod towards the celebrity crowd, and its high rates ensure that only the well-off can be seen inside its halls. With five-star dining and a central location, celebs are sure to be found nearby!

15 15. The Okanagan, British Columbia

Lake Okanagan in south-central British Columbia is one of the most popular vacation spots in Canada, and the mountains, rivers, forests, and lakes of the region have attracted hundreds of cottagers, including celebrities such as Martin Short, Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell, and Jason Priestly. When Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban were spotted together in the area, the tabloids descended to the area in a feeding frenzy, where it was discovered that even Arnold Schwarzenegger was building a cottage here!

14 14. Banff, Alberta

Banff is one of the most touristed areas of Canada, with over 3 million people descending on the sleepy mountain town every year, according to the Calgary Herald. Trendy boutique shops, upscale bars, and pricey hotels line the dozen-or-so streets in the town, all surrounded by the towering Rocky Mountains where world-class skiing can be found. This is exactly the kind of place that attracts the celebrity crowd. Some of the celebrities spotted here include Mimi Rogers, Alec Baldwin, and Leryn Franco.

13 13. Banff Springs Hotel, Banff

If the town of Banff is a popular celebrity destination, then the epicenter of Banff for celebrity spotting has to be the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel. Situated on top of the natural hot springs that started Banff off as a tourist mecca, the Banff Springs Hotel is an awe-inspiring luxury hotel where guests pay upwards of $500 a night. This luxury hotel has seen an endless stream of celebrities, from Marilyn Monroe to Alfred Hitchcock to John F Kennedy. Today, Steven Spielberg, Meg Ryan, Dan Akroyd and Barak Obama have all stayed here.

12 12. Lobby Restaurant & Lounge, Toronto

The Lobby Lounge is part of the exquisite Shangri-La hotel, a celebrity magnet of its own in Toronto. During the Toronto International Film Festival, this restaurant is packed with A-list celebrities who come here for the casual atmosphere and to keep out of the limelight.

Josh Brolin, Benicio Del Toro, Salma Hayek and director Wayne Blair are all known to visit The Lobby when they’re in town for the festival, while Drake frequents this restaurant often. You’re free to dine here too if you can afford the $250 steaks and $500 bottles of wine!

11 11. Lake Joseph, Ontario

Lake Joseph is part of Ontario’s famous Muskoka cottage country, and is often referred to as “Billionaires Row”. The cottages on Lake Joseph are almost all owned by business tycoons such as Kevin O’Leary, rich celebrities such as Demi Moore and Cindy Crawford, and musicians such as Kenny G and Taylor Swift. If you could somehow slip throw rows of private security gates to view the sprawling castles these people call “cottages”, you would quickly realize that the people who come here are different. The average home on Lake Joseph sells for over $5 million and is larger than a city block!

10 10. Blue Water Café, Vancouver

The Blue Water Café is one of Vancouver’s greatest seafood restaurants and is famous among locals for the place where you can spot all the celebrities when they come to Vancouver. Local boy Ryan Reynolds is a regular here, and the restaurant is proud to include Neil Patrick Harris, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, and Chrissy Teigen on their reservation list. The restaurant isn’t exclusive to celebrities, so if you feel like spending a hundred or two on some fantastic seafood dining, be sure to get your name on the reservation list!

9 9. Chateau Lake Louise, Alberta

The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise is another massive luxury hotel in the Canadian Rockies where celebrities like to frequent. This hotel was made famous when it was used to film several scenes in The Shining, but Jack Nicholson isn’t the only A-lister to come here.

Woody Harrelson frequents the hotel for the great skiing nearby, while Catherine Zeta-Jones, Madonna, and Jim Carrey have all had selfies taken with adoring fans while staying here. In 2011, Prince William and Princess Kate stayed a night here during the honeymoon tour of Canada.

8 8. False Creek, Vancouver

The False Creek area of Vancouver is often used to take photos of the city’s iconic skyline, but the rows of million-dollar condos hold more than just postcard value: several celebrities own them! Ryan Reynolds and Nelly Furtado are Vancouver locals who would naturally gravitate to the most beautiful spot in the city, while George Clooney once owned a condo here. Celebrities who don’t own Vancouver property are sometimes spotted snapping photos or having a coffee in False Creek, including Dennis Rodman and John Stewart!

7 7. Whistler, British Columbia

Whistler’s ski slopes are among the most famous in the world. Celebrity ski junkies are spotted here all the time; so much, in fact, that most people don’t pay attention to them! Ricky Gervais, Seal, Heidi Klum, Ashton Kutcher, Katie Holmes, and Prince Charles not only frequent Whistler Blackcomb Ski Resort but also own homes nearby. Whistler is such a draw for celebrities that employees at the various shops, restaurants, and hotels in the area are made to sign privacy agreements. If you want to talk with a celeb, getting a service job in Whistler is a guaranteed route to doing so!

6 6. North Shores, Vancouver

Vancouver is a haven for Hollywood celebrities fleeing the chaos and crowds of southern California, and North Vancouver is where they flock to. So many homes along the North Shores are owned by mega-rich celebrities that you would need a boat to see them all. This is, in fact, one of the only ways you might spot a celeb in this area.

Take the BC Ferries route to Nanaimo, on Vancouver Island, and you will pass by Demi Moore’s house, along with Channing Tatum and Tom Cruise’s homes, to name a few.

5 5. The Muskokas, Ontario

British Columbia has The Okanagan, and Ontario has The Muskokas: a region along the eastern shores of Georgian Bay, a couple of hours north of Toronto, where Canadian well-to-do and A-list celebrities keep jaw-dropping summer cottages. The Muskokas is what you think when someone says “Cottage Country”, plus millions of dollars of rich people’s property. Some of these big names include Goldie Hawn, Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, Kate Hudson, Drake and others who all own cottages here, so it’s not hard to “accidentally” bump into a superstar while picking up some steaks and beer!

4 4. Tribe Hyperclub, Montreal

If older celebrities lounging at cottages don’t interest you, then how do younger A-listers partying through all hours of the night sound? Tribe Hyperclub is where they go when they’re in Montreal. This dance club was made famous when Paris Hilton partied her way through here, and since then the likes of Justin Bieber, Seth Rogan, Lindsay Lohan, and Zac Efron have all been spotted boozing and dancing the night away. You don’t need to be a celebrity to get into the club, but it sure helps to skip the line and get past the bouncers at the front door!

3 3. Hotel Le St James, Montreal

Another Montreal celebrity hangout, the Hotel Le St. James is where most celebs stay when they’re in town, whether to shoot a film or for the annual Grand Prix. This is an exquisite luxury hotel, the kind of place where they host “Ferrari Parties” every now and again. Heads of State, including Queen Elizabeth herself, have stayed here, but so have John Goodman, George Clooney, Bruce Willis and Micheal Douglas. Chances are pretty good that you won’t get to go inside the hotel, but if you wait around outside, you might just spot a celeb!

2 2. Montreal Grand Prix

This part of the Formula One circuit has been an annual event in Montreal since 1961. Officially called The Canadian Grand Prix, this is a prime place to spot celebrities who are fans of motor racing. Micheal Douglas is a huge Formula One fan and can be seen here almost every year. Jerry Seinfeld is a staple, along with Jim Carrey and Judd Apatow. Sandra Bullock has been spotted two years in a row, although she’s not known as a Formula One fan. The great thing about these celebs is that when they’re here, they’re just normal racing fans, so you can easily spot them mixing in with the crowd and enjoying the spectacle!

1 1. Toronto International Film Festival

There’s no denying that TIFF brings the largest collection of celebrities onto Canadian soil every year than any other event. The Toronto International Film Festival is one of the largest film festivals in the world. A million people descend onto the city every year in September, making it as large as the Cannes. Every major motion picture for the upcoming year is shown here first, so it’s easy to spot pretty much any celebrity you can think of. Jennifer Aniston, Tom Hanks, Emma Stone, Matt Damon, Angelina Jolie and all the others are usually spotted dining or shopping somewhere in Toronto while TIFF is in full swing.
