Driving can be stressful no matter where you do it. But when you throw in some steep cliffs, deep ravines, feet-thick mud, and angry locals, things can get especially dangerous. Of course, having the right vehicle makes all the difference, but sometimes, you have to make do with what you've got.

And no one knows that better than the Top Gear crew, who for years have traveled to far-flung locations and bought vehicles sight unseen, then driven them for thousands of miles. While the team has changed a lot over the years due to various casting problems and changes, you can't say their adventures were ever boring.

And in fact, the hosts have tried tons of roads all over the globe, so we don't have to. Here are 20 of the dangerous roads the Top Gear hosts actually tried. And really, we don't recommend following in their footsteps... er... tire treads.

20 The Bolivian Death Road

Yungas Road in Bolivia is also known as the Bolivian Death Road because it poses such a hazard to those trying to traverse it, Wikipedia explains. In 2009, the Top Gear team hit the road with cheap, locally bought vehicles and suffered plenty of mishaps before finally making it to their destination.

19 Sand Dunes Of Death, Too

Not only did the crew barely survive the Bolivian Death Road, but they also had some missteps while driving down sand dunes on the same trip. One vehicle completely crashed, while the other two made it out okay. Maybe the hosts should have tried staying on the roads.

18 Shipki La, India

On the border between India and Tibet is Shipki La, a treacherously rocky road that the Top Gear team tried out in 2011. Can't you imagine pebbles and boulders falling on you while you try to keep your tires on the road? Yikes.

17 Stelvio Pass, Italy

Plenty of drivers call Stelvio Pass in Italy the “greatest road,” but its 48 hairpin turns say differently. Top Gear has traveled there a few times to test numerous vehicles, but just looking at the photos gives us the heebie-jeebies.

16 Guallatiri Volcano Road

Part of Top Gear’s adventures traveling from Bolivia to Chile involved driving over a volcano—literally. Well, the trio tried to drive over Guallatiri volcano, but they were forced to turn back because the high elevation caused health problems, BBC declared—the volcano is 19,918 feet high at its peak, per Wikipedia.

15 Ushuaia Argentina

2015’s Patagonia Special was a Top Gear episode that saw the crew in Argentina, where some drama went down. The Top Gear Fandom Wiki explained that the license plate on Jeremy’s Porsche was taken as an insult, so locals attacked the crew’s cars overnight. Clearly, staying in Argentina was a dangerous move on the team’s part—and just as risky as treacherous roads.

14 English Channel…

Yeah, not a road—but that didn’t stop these guys. Part of this trip involved sailing the English Channel with the vehicles they were driving on land. Modifications made it possible, though the guys certainly still got wet—and didn’t beat any records, either.

13 Fairy Meadows Road Pakistan

For a road with such a frilly name, Fairy Meadows Road is anything but delightful. The road features steep drop-offs, plenty of rocky turns, and some nail-biting one-way routes. The road isn't even paved, guys, what are you thinking?

12 This DIY Bridge In Burma

Would you trust a bridge that you built yourself to carry a huge truck across? That’s what the Top Gear guys did in their Burma special, the Wikipedia page notes, and it doesn’t look very safe. Then again, safety was not exactly a theme on this show!

11 The Route From Kurdistan to Palestine

Though the crew got out of there unscathed, their trip from Kurdistan to Palestine was one fraught with danger, the Telegraph explained. The guys were in a potentially dangerous (and militarized) area, but they were careful to stay away from the more hazardous areas.

10 Black Mountain Road Wales

The Top Gear team traversed Black Mountain Road in Wales the same way many other expert drivers have—in sports cars. The winding road is an excellent place to test out new wheels, but that also makes it a huge tourist attraction and therefore a very dangerous place to play as everyone wants to pretend they're at NASCAR.

9 North Pole

It’s not a road, per se, but the North Pole expedition the Top Gear team went on was not exactly a walk in the park. Driving in snow and ice is difficult, and the crew did plenty of sliding, crashing, and slopping through the snow to be the first guys in a motor vehicle to reach the magnetic north.

8 Vietnam Roads Via Motorbike

People who live in Vietnam may tool around on motorbikes, but at least one of the Top Gear crew didn’t even know how to ride when they arrived to film. We’re not sure what was more dangerous: the handmade helmets or turning their bikes into watercraft later in the journey.

7 The Nile, Africa

Again, not a road—but the Top Gear guys clearly enjoy living dangerously. They actually had to float a car on a raft while traipsing around in the Nile. At least they're saving some wear and tear on the car, right? Well, mileage at least.

6 Deeply Rutted Roads In Africa

While in pursuit of the “definitive source of the Nile,” the guys from the show got stuck in the mud… More than once. Sure, part of the show was about the crew making their way out of literally sticky situations... But the toilet seat hanging off the car here doesn't give us much hope for their survival.

5 Tizi n’Test Morocco

In 2017, Top Gear went to Morocco to drive the Tizi n’Test mountain road—with a BMW X3, no less, the TopGear site remarked. This is definitely not a place you want to be stranded, nor is it somewhere to safely take your eyes off the road.

4 An Apocalyptic Adventure

This stunt was so dangerous, BBC America recapped, that the guys couldn’t even drive the cars themselves. Instead, they had to use remote controls to power the cars in this “apocalyptic” car battle. We hope we never see these cars on the road.

3 Any Road In India, TBH

Average vehicle speeds are around 11mph in India, James May wrote for TopGear, but that stat doesn’t tell the whole story. He explained that driving in India is the most nerve-wracking experience because of 40mph jogs, then braking down to zero in a split second.

2 Crunching Car Lane

The Top Gear crew didn’t just drive on roads—they drove on top of cars, too. This is a Marauder, an armored vehicle that can clearly bust through concrete walls and smash commuter sedans. Honestly, there’s nothing safe about driving over the top of passenger vehicles, people.

1 Transfagarasan Highway, Romania

Top Gear deems it beautiful and scenic, but the Transfagarasan Highway in Romania has way too many steep drop-offs and winding curves for our taste. Fortunately, the crew made it out of this one alright, too—we’re just glad we didn’t have to go along for the ride.
